While we're talking about the very opening, I always get my marines out of base at the start of a round, and have them organised into at least 2 groups (or you'll end up with 1 guy alone in one direction and everyone running the other way). I then build the armoury myself (having already placed power nodes/extractors ahead of the marines).
I guess this boils down to a few things:
a) don't be afraid to get out of the chair to build and to shoot skulks*
b) build your own stuff as much as possible - keeps more marines on the front lines. Just be careful not to leave marines unsupported in big battles
c) Organisation (over mic) is key to commanding marines, especially on pubs
and
d) When you're starting out commanding, try smaller servers if you can. The number of requests for meds and ammo, many of which you will want to grant, can be absolutely insane on larger servers, and can be a huge stress while trying to keep on top of everything else. I have nothing but respect for comms who can effectively command 11 marines. I struggle with 5-7!
* if you suspect a base-rush, DO NOT get out of the chair before you've placed a second CC and directed your remaining marines to it, if they're too far away to respond (at the very beginning of the game, this is).

I will see what I can do. Planned is first to do a alien comm guide me thinks.
After that I can add marine stuff. I did not because I asumed there was no real interest in advanced stuff. (this was based after so many advice in pubs always getting ignored hehe)

Oh my god, comming on 24 player servers is so ridiculously stressful lol

It doesn't have to be, but you need to treat it differently than a 6v6. What you need to find are 3-4 people who can follow orders and complete the critically needed tasks (e.g. one competent gorge to defend nanogrid or one competent lerk to clear mines). Then give general orders to the rest of the players (e.g. try to stay alive as long as possible, don't attack marines bite res, go attack crossroads, etc).
@RooBubba, wait....there are servers.....that aren't 24 man servers o.O? lol but in all seriousness, the servers I play on are mostly 24 man servers, rookie friendly anyway. I mostly hang out in ISBN and Tactical Gamer rookie servers, simply because I still consider myself a rookie and they have the lowest ping for me ^_^. Also, one time I hopped out late in the game to stop what I thought was 2 skulks on the mini map heading towards our base, turns out it was a onos and a gorge. We still won the game but boy did I learn my lesson fast
@DC_Darkling, many thanks for what you have done and plan to do in the future ^_^ And while I don't know how widespread the interest is in advanced tactics and ideas, I know that my interest in them is quite severe. So you'll be doing me a favor anyway ^_^
@Blarney_Stone, its the only coming I've ever done save for when I enter a dead server, the rookie servers I play on are always 24 man servers, so I guess I'm just not as stressed due to playing them all the time. In fact the only thing I'd say that's ever stressed me about this game are complainers, example, "gg, this team bull****, only go here go there no teamwork" That really ticks me off because I feel he is ruining the game for everyone and destroying teamwork.
@ Scardybob, I'm curious, what do you consider a competent gorge? I can understand how to judge a lerk, skulk, fade, marine, ectera, but how to you judge a gorge?
I'm absolutely with you on that. I would rather command a team full of new players who have no idea what they are doing, but are cooperative and responsive, than a team full of players who complain about everything and criticize you and your teammates all the time. I can understand getting competitive in a scrim or a gather but getting all butthurt on pubs is just silly.
As for comming 24p servers, the main problem is really just that you get "solider needs health" and "soldier needs ammo" alerts about five times a second. It takes a while to get used to.

Hydra/clog placement, ability to stay alive, knows how to maximize other alien health in a tough situation, etc.
