    It's just for help with selecting faces with a certain material. So for example, type in "trim" and press the button, then all the faces with a material with "trim" in its name will be selected.

    ah... THANK YOU!

    i thought its something like a browse button -> select button, but nothing happens when i pressed the "select by material" because the input field was empty.
    now it all makes sense.
