Well, to be fair do lights in NS2 also go through walls. The flashlight for instance has it's source positioned somewhat in front of the player's collision cylinder, so you can still emit it from the other side of a thin wall if you hug it close enough.
Or light sources from actual lamps are sometimes placed visually outside of the actual mesh, so you have a cone of light that starts behind lamp meshes.
i don't. shadows are the number one cause of video lag and video crashes.
It's odd with shadows on it does feel like video lag when I move my mouse. And my frames are not even low with them on but something feels off even with shadows on by itself and no Ambient Occlusion.
Mainly I do not use shadow because they are so blocky, jaggy and strange looking. I tend to hate shadows like those. In any game that lets you modify the ini or other files to get sharper shadows I usually turn it all the way up to a high res.

It's true, cant count the number of people Ive shot around corners in TF2 cause they were too close to a wall and I could see the shadow through it.
