Can it be done?
This question has surfaced a lot recently, expecially with the Fade becoming the backbone of a well organized Kharaa army. Most people seem to feel confident that the answer is: "fix" the Fade. Others offer up vast, expansive, intricate strategies that end up crumbling 10 minutes in. And, worst of all, as soon as things go South many people just give up. Oh, they'll continue to fight but their heart isn't in it anymore. Once you have admitted defeat, it is only a matter of time.

Personally, I've survived this war with the Kharaa led by their symbols of doom: The Fade and The Onos. It is possible, of course. But everyone is looking for that magic genie. What is the one thing I can do to win every time? What is the unbeatable Fronteersmen Strat? Surprise! There isn't one. But, there are basic things you can do to help. Some I've seen said before, some I'm not so sure. But it all boils down to two things:

1) It is never hopeless. Never. I don't care how bad things get. I don't care how many Onos they have or how few resources you have. The game is not over until you find yourself back in that Ready Room, starting the next round. Period. Sure, some situations are very tough to escape. But the fact remains: the game isn't over until the game says its over.

2) The Fronteersmen are unlike anything the world has ever seen. They are not the army. They are not the marines. They are no where near the Kharaa. They are a totally unique, elite fighting force. To meet their new threat, they have to evolve. Much like the slogan of popular Xbox game Halo, this truly is "Combat Evolved". This game can not be played like any other. New ideas are a must. Evolution. Change. Creativity. "Be beat the beast, one must think like the beast." You'd be surprised how useful such a saying is in this game. At any rate, evolve you game. Do what they won't expect. If you were an alien in their position, what would suck tremendously for you? What would you never want to happen? If you can figure it out, then do it (original as that may sound... )

I suppose my point is, "Think outside the box." I'll give some examples:

People talk about stopping the Kharaa from getting up the second and third Hives, but these strats almost always focus on the commander. Just think like an alien. In those early moments, there are two things you want to protect with you life: your resource towers, and your GORGES! Remember, only gorges can build things, and you don't start out as one. Taking down resource towers as well as careless gorges is an excelent move. Despite what seems to be popular beliefe, if a Fronteersmen knows the map and doesn't go alone, the group can operate seperate of the Commander's full attention. Its important the Commander knows what's going on, but they should be able to rest easy knowing that his boys are taking care of things. Of course things go wrong. But you can always call for assistance/backup/health/ammo.
Which brings me to another point. There is no rule saying all Fronteersmen have to either totally split up or all go to the exact same place. It feels like maps like Eclipse were designed for squads to contain the area. And that's really a Fronteersmen's job, isn't it? Containment of the alien threat. Cut them off. Just as the beasties use their dreaded fear-factor, Fronteersmen can also utilize psychological warfare.

I've noticed that I'm rambling, so I'll draw to a close. My point is, do as the Kharaa do:

Evolve, or die like the rest.

So long as one Fronteersmen stands, the fight can go on. I speak the truth when I say I've seen the last marine on the team take out a Hive with no ammo at all. Only a Jetpack and a knife to his name. He took down a Hive. Were his opponents morons? Not especially. Was he uber-leet?! Its not really that. But he was creative. Clever. And he didn't give up.

... We lost, but only because he was too busy gloating once he took down the Hive. But still...
