Dissapointed :(

Hey,
I was a huge fan of NS1 and played thousands of games for years.
Now after some thought, a new computer and the new trailers I bought NS2, hoping it would be as awesome as NS1.

But I feel dissapointed. I loved the very long matches and the 2 races, where one has a commander and the others don't. I knew it wasn't that balanced, but it was so much more fun.
Also the ability to secure spots only with buildings was great. Turrets/Defensive buildings on both sides were much stronger and you needed either a whole army (aliens) or granade launchers (marines) to get into fortified rooms.

Now the matches are all about the units. Buildings take a secondary role. You can't fortify a place with buildings only. Now your whole team have to be on every room on the map or you just lose resource towers to loners. No more electrified RTs, or strong defensiv buildings form the aliens. Relocations as marines isn't possible as well, which was a huge strategic point in NS1. It comes all down to who gets their exos or higher life forms first. Rush all the RTs hope your marines shoot better than the aliens bite. There is no way you can play it more safe and slow now, when you clearly know your team isn't as good as theirs.

I will look into NS2 at some point later again. Maybe it will change, maybe it won't.

Greetings from a huge fan of NS1.

It's true that NS2 is more PVP compared to NS, when played as a turtle marine team. But the general consensus is that people want to fight people in video games, they don't want to fight structures or huge turret farms. I do sympathise with you though, some of those epic public battles with fortresses all over were awesome as well. I'm of the type that likes to build up lots of stuff as well, but I do that in Company of Heroes against computer players, since they don't care about complete demolition battles :P

However I do believe that the emphasis on PVP is a good one, it's still quite possible though for aliens to fortify everything using their structures... I'd rather not see something like Nuclear Dawn though, with PVP early game, which then turns into turret farms versus humans. It's been a while since I checked it out, but that was how it was ~5 months ago and I found it a tad bit boring during the turret farm phase because it's hard to counter those things...

fair enough, although it doesn't all come down to who gets their exos or higher life forms. that is usually the direct result of one team having a much greater economy, ergo they were better in the early/mid game period.

close matches and comebacks can happen. it's not perfect, but if you're serious about ns2 then i recommend trying to find a server with decent players. rookie servers are typically frustrating because there's very little coordination/communication.

NS1 was far too niche. As you said, games were dictated largely by strategy and placement of structures. You could be as good as you like, but without the proper backup and strategical placements, you weren't going to do anything.

NS2 had to change if it wanted to be succesful. As such, it has become a glorified COD type game, where all the strategy in the world won't beat 90% accuracy, and the game revolves primarily around players and the FPS perspective, rather than strategy and the RTS perspective.

I agree, its disappointing, but it was simply to niche a play style, and would have been a financial disaster for the developers.

Thank you guys for your consstructive and nice comments.
So I am not the only one who is thinking like this. NS1 really was a niche game and you are absolutely right when you say ns2 is more like a "cod" game now. Well, sadly I liked ns1, it was the only game which was so strategical and team oriented, where good communication won over accuracy.

Enjoy your time with NS2 :) Maybe we see us some time in the future in another FPS/RTS game.

    Greetings!

I for one preferred the fps gameplay in ns1 to that in ns2, seemed faster, deadlier and more exciting. NS2 combat all to often devolves into a confusing jump spamming clusterfuck and both marines and aliens feel gimped compared to ns1.
