Suggest Commander (when the team can't make their mind up as to who plays commander)

In several pub games, the first few minutes of the game are spent with skulks awkwardly hopping about the map and marines practicing firing without their crosshair.

Obviously, on one or both teams, everyone is too scared to go commander.

My theory is that since the players arent aware of how 'experienced' any particular individual on the team is, they have no idea who should command.
Sure it's easy to decide when there is one white name and seven green ones... but it's often not that simple.

Even the most experienced player may have no idea at all that he/she is the most experienced.

Not to say that it is always the most experienced player that should comm, BUT if the team is having trouble deciding who will comm, choosing the most/2nd most experienced player is a much BETTER decision than choosing a clueless person.

So, I suggest a feature that only one player on the team needs to activate (perhaps by console command), called Suggest Commander.

What it will do is give everyone on that team a text readout of the 3 players on the team (number can be adjusted depending on team size) that have logged the most hours into Steam in NS2 (or perhaps even a more reliable time method, if one exists in the game code).

That way the game suggests to the team which 3 players might be most likely to command well.

It can be changed so as to show the players' hours, or just keep them invisible and rank them from 1 to 3 in Hours Experience.

Or simply want to shoot/bite sth for them selfs from time to time.

This system might be convenient for non-comms but I personally wouldn't like it at all. I myself have sth round about 350-400 hrs on steam so it's not unlikely I pop up in that list quite often. Esp on servers where noone wants to command. BUT I play commander that much, that my skills on the field are beginning to degenerate. So from time to time I want to play FPS too. Last thing I need is half of the team begging for me to enter the comm seat.
And besides ending up with always the same players in the chair, pure playtime can't be the answer since i met ppl with like 500+hrs on NS2 and not a single game as comm on their record...

So in my opinion the most efficient way to stop this would be, that people simply stop bitching around when unhappy with the comm and just do it themselves from time to time. Because the ppl complaining the loudest about the comm are the same ones who never do it themselves. (From my experience)

Plus less flaming against the comm might even result in ppl beeing less afraid to do it....

See, there's a problem when most experienced player is commanding while noobs can't do anything.
There was a game I was commanding on marine side, all the action was between cafe CC and locker hive, we had terminal and departures as well. Generator was totally undefended, I told my team several times to go there and kill the hive but they wouldn't do it. I dropped myself a JP and FT, went there and did that solo with no problem.
The other time I was khamm and situation was pretty much the same, nobody even tried bombing main base while they had no IPs at other base. I logged out, went to skylights as the skulk, turned into gorge and biled the crap out of their power node.

These are just few examples, this happens too often in pub matches. So I prefer to stay in the field, because good player + noob commander is better than good commander + noob player.

To answer both posts above, thats why I suggested it to display the top 3 rather than only the top 1 .

If players are too bad to follow your commands to attack a hive, they are probably also too bad to command without totally screwing it up. (Reason: not that they are unskilled, but that they are unwilling to listen, and thats not something you want in commanders or players).

All I want is to have a logical end to when games begin and no-one knows who SHOULD command. Anyone can still command after a suggestion has been made, the game just makes a suggestion when the players cant make up their minds.

Perhaps the game can suggest the top 3 players without doing it 'in order' - and just show the names of the players least likely to bring the entire team to doom by being terrible at commanding and generally not being prepared to listen to advice on how to improve.

I actually was in a game a couple of weeks ago, playing marines, and i saw that we were able to take 7 extractors within 4 minutes. This obviously meant that the alien commander was helplessly confused. So I went over to the alien team, found out they had res-locked themselves and had to tell them how concede worked. The next game I taught the khammander how to be better, and i think he really appreciated it. So I certainly agree that you don't always want the 'best' player comming (everyone on the team was noob). But there has to be SOME way better than someone, after 5 minutes of wandering around the map to be like "Ok fine, I'll comm, but I'm not so good" and then have a mediocre game.

Edit: The game in question ended about 6 minutes after I told the khammander what Onos eggs do :)
