While I am not sure as to why anybody would bind anything to the caps lock key, I believe that it was intended by the devs to not allow the ability to do this as some sort of built-in prevention. I have brought it up with them, and it is being discussed.
You should remap the caps lock key on your system to something more sensible, like backspace or control. Then you won't have any trouble binding it in any game. Who even uses the caps lock function for anything other than typing like a retard anyway?

I was thinking "yea its a really low priority" as its not a common key but then i remembered that this is a PC game and custom key bindings are one of the very last bastions that has mostly survived the "consolitis" of recent years. It should be kept, as that is what PC gaming has always been about: configurability.
I personally use M2 as forward, and z and x as strafe, with an inverted mouse, as i was born on Id games like Quake and flight sims.
