Waiting For Server & Time Out

It's been a while since i played NS2, last time was at one of the early beta releases.

Anyway, it seems impossible for me to connect to any servers modded/normal. Authentication seems ok but its always stuck at Waiting Server stage. And aprox. 90 secs later it disconnect with Timed Out error.

I'm behind a Linux Download server, with OpenVPN. Seems ok with other steam games and everything else.

I know this seems like a dumb question but does it work non VPN?

The server list can sometimes trip DDOS protection. My ISP, SuddenLink, hates the server browser with fiery passion.
the solution on that front is to reduce the number of servers listed in steam settings as mentioned in the sticky about network issues.

Actually yes, it works if i Bypass server and connect directly from modem. But i prefer, and it should work with VPN

Well at least you have your culprit to diagnose
I'd check the VPN settings.

Thats not a solution, thats evading the problem Problem is with game client, not with steam since every other steam game works and not with VPN since i can do anything except playing NS2.

And while that may be true, no one knows why it won't work - so it's up to you to diagnose and mettle with it until you can find the exact cause, that way a fix can be included in the next patch for everyone.

Try all the settings for that vpn first and let us know how it goes.
If you find nothing you can capture network usage of this issue with and without the vpn to compare, using Wire shark, and upload that for us to see. But please attempt to try everything else first.. maybe a singular setting is what does it.

Hello,

I'm having the same problem with OpenVPN. Unfortunately i can't bypass VPN because of the local network structure (living on an university campus).

Is there any solution for getting NS started with VPN yet?

Other Steam games (e.g. Team Fortress, DOTA 2) are just working fine with Steam and open VPN.

Would be a shame if i can't get the game running...

Can you collect some data by using wire shark?
Not many ways to help users when we can't see any data or reproduce the problem.
