Mic works fine, can't hear a thing

Weirdest thing: my mic works fine in-game, and my headset/mic work fine outside Steam/NS. But after I sign in and then choose NS2, from the first screen (y'know, Play/Options/Training etc) on I can't hear anything: no game sounds, music, mic talk (even my own), etc. I've updated drivers and Windows 7, verified the game cache, restarted several times. I do run Comcast in the US but Constant Guard isn't listed among programs to be removed, so I assume I don't have it. BTW the training videos play (I can hear them) fine.... Help?

Update: initially, others in-game could hear me even if I couldn't hear myself or any game/music/chat. Now, though, nobody can hear me either. Outside Steam, under Microphone properties, I can hear the mic clearly under "listen to this device", etc. I have no mods or anything special on my install, just the regular steam/NS patches everyone gets. So.... looks like my mic/headset is working fine everywhere UNTIL I open NS from Steam (and even then, training vids are audible_). Anyone else have this issue, ever? Thanks.

I've had this issue come and go -- can't yet replicate it consistently. Basically, in the NS2 system settings control panel, you can see the mic levels working just fine, however in-game, others cannot hear you. When this occurs, my fix has been to get to that Audio section, and choose a different input for a split second, then switch back to your proper mic input. Click Apply. Then people on the server can hear you again.

Approximately 3-4 other people have confirmed they experience this mic "mute" (for lack of a better term) as well on our server.

Unbinding the key to something different and then rebinding it back USUALLY works for me. It's a bug in the newest build.

    Eness Tuh,

Can you check that the output device on the sound tab matches your headset. It used to be that ns just used whatever the default devices were in windows, but they have changed it up to let us pick which output to use.

I spent a few minutes the other day trying to figure something similar out only to discover that I was sending the sound the my surround sound system, which was off, instead of my headphones.
