[Project] NS2 Finnish community

We Finns have always been huge fans of the Natural Selection universe. Back in the day, the Finnish community was one of the biggest in the whole scene, and we are bringing it back. We've been working on the community for a while now; we have created a simple website, a Facebook page, a steam group and an IRC channel, which has reached over 100 unique daily users idling and chatting (#ns2.fi at @ Qnet). We are using all these sites to promote upcoming competitive games, gathers, events and updates to keep the community interested and healthy.

Features of NS2 Finland

What has been done so far:


Established a stable community


Brought Finnish NS2 players under the same roof
- Over 100 users in the IRC-channel
- Over 300 players in the steam group
- Established a Facebook page, getting people to join here is being worked on


Created a simple website
- Domain name
- Wordpress
- Simple logo


Created a simple forum
- Organized sections


National gathers
- #ns2gatheri channel created
- 50-70 users daily
- More than one gather being played on a daily basis
- Gatherbot: this is something that I'm going to hype later on, there will be a lot great, great features and we are working on improving it
- A gather statistics webpage (in beta) / ranking system



Some Finnish casting of matches has been done by:

First FINNISH only invitational tournament
- To be started 6.3.2013, it will be casted in finnish and it will have large predictions

Also team Quaxy has promised to lend their servers (2) to be used in clan matches if needed (if they don't have a match sceduled).

What we are currently working on:


Updating the website with the latest happenings
- Working hard on writing as much as possible!


Searching for more Finns to contribute to the community (we know you're out there!)


More Finnish casted games


Improving the Gatherbot
- We have created a serverside gathermod that, for now, will record player performance statistics for the stats site (might be an ns2stats plug-in)

What we still need:

- Active amateur journalists interested in NS2
- Scene followers to discuss the latest gossips


More servers
- Server companies to get interested about NS2
- Uniting Finnish servers
- Buying more servers / needing more contributors


Finnish tournaments to promote the competitive side of NS2
- Finnish "only" tournaments/cups
- Need more teams for this to happen


Helping people establish new competitive teams by giving advice and tips


Advertise finnish scene to get more and more people interested

Community Contributors/Leaders

- oma / Mainly responsible for organizing the community and gathers, a donator on webspace and servers, the mastermind behind most of the ideas, helps with the Gatherbot, working on some minor graphics for the website and the Gatherbot, edit: organized a cup/tournament.

- sadisti / Head of the servers, the Steam group and the webspace/domain name, main donator for the game and mumble servers, will help jukkan with the serverside gathermod when possible.

- jukkan / Responsible for coding our incredible Gatherbot and statistics page, possibly the main developer of the planned serverside gathermod, he is really important for our national gathers (even though he does not even have the hardware to run the game properly).

- Railo / Server and webspace donator, PR to public players.

Secondary Contributors

- HDsilakka / Hosting the 24/7 gather server

- Therius/kesaesa / Secondary admin of the gather channel

- Varathar / Secondary admin of the gather channel

About the gatherbot:

After it's completed, we could use it for European gathers at the #NS2.gather, which is in an idle state for now.

Some of the awesome features that are/will be included:
- Picking system designed with equality in player skills in mind
- Statistic/ranking for picking teams more equally
- Statistics page to store one's personal records
- Achievements, unlocking fun and inspiring achievements from playing gathers
- Captain/rookie system, veteran players can become captains, avoiding bad pickings
- Voting for captains, maps, gather results, highlights, voting to replace idle players

EDIT: Tournament 'Showdown 2013' has been successful about 50 (finnish) viewers for every match, and for the final game Saunamen versus Exertus, i've asked for Reddog's to cast it in english so it will be easier for others to listen/watch.
