Steam Workshop Downloading, it doesn't work very well

I'm a bit surprised that this isn't brought up more often, in fact I've only been able to confirm it with other AU server hosts.

Server mod downloading is broken, client side and server side. Larger sized mods time out from the download server side with an Error 28.

As discussed:
<a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=124547" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...howtopic=124547</a>

Client side is even worse, with a very likely chance of the download timing out, the client getting booted to the main menu with an error saying "Missing required mod", when it should be automatically downloading and an error 16 in console for their troubles. Again, I've only been able to confirm this with Australian clients.

Client side issue also discussed here:

... and in one or two other threads that I've seen recently that I didn't bother replying to.

It's happened to me, and I'm in the US.

Happened to me and some of my clients here in Singapore.

Especially troublesome because I run a Combat Mod server which requires several mods. Almost all the support issues raised by my clients were regarding this "Missing Required Mod" bug.

Glad the issue isn't as localized as I thought. This is a pretty severe issue when mod support is supposed to be such a priority. Hope it gets looked at soon.

This has been broken in some degree ever since the workshop was implemented in NS2. Doing google searches on that error only show results from this forum so I'm thinking the issue is with how NS2 interacts with the workshop rather than the issue being with steam.

Just last night when I was going through a log file after build 238 came out I was noticing a lot of clients being removed from the server because they were unable to download a required mod. I only had 1 small welcome message mod on the server at the time yet people were still sometimes unable to join because they would get an error message saying the mod failed to download.

In my own experience, this only happens when the Steam Workshop is unreachable or has a high load.

Whenever I haven't been able to join a modded server, I've always been able to subscribe to the mods getting error 16s in the workshop myself and it would download fine.

Heard about a google discussion thread going on about the issue. Can someone link that?

Right I have had this for NS2, however when it happens it also occurs in CS:GO at the same time. It's not isolated to one game, restarting steam fixed it completely however.

This was all client side mind.

The problem is relying on one central distribution system that none of us can do anything about. You never had problems like this in NS1 b/c servers actually served files to clients directly.

Many of us would rather have the bandwith cost and host the mods to clients ourselves especially for things like maps and know that the clients can always download it from our server even if valve's server is blown up.
