UWE please make your Statistics PUBLIC

piratedavepiratedave Join Date: 2012-03-10 Member: 148561Members
as the title says, make the official UWE statistics available to everyone. And i dont mean just a once off release, but upload all the statistics to your website as you receive them or at least on a weekly basis.

this would benefit everyone but mainly it would benefit mappers

Our current approach to mapping is way too in-efficient. Mineshaft, Refinery, Docking, Tram are perfect examples of this. Hundreds of hours down the drain due to having to do big changes. Theres a saying, measure twice cut once. This saying in regards to mapping would be,... get the layout done right before you start the detailed geometry, texturing and polish.

Imagine if engineers had to build skyscrapers and bridges without building any small scale mock ups to test what would happen to the structures if they were subjected to high winds ? Mappers need to test their layouts before they spend hundreds of hours finishing the map, and in order to get feedback they either have to have players giving them feedback or they need some statistics to shed light on any potential problems with their layout.

Official mappers have it easy because they have playtesters and UWE statistics to help them, but what about the custom mappers that are doing everything themselves ? If the official mappers are having trouble balancing their maps, what hope do non official mappers have ???

maybe im going off topic meh, anyways ... why are the statistics not made public ? is there a reason to hide them ? and what does everyone else think ?

Honestly, I really can't see any reason why statistics can't be released. It's not like it would affected the game at all. They don't have to post comprehensive data, which would take time. I'd love to see some of the basic data that is being collected.

What statistics do you exactly want revealed? Your question is not very clear in my opinion.

If your map is being hosted on private community servers, aren't you able to talk to that community/server hosts and get feedback? Does UWE even have access to data on private servers?

It seems to me you just want Marine and Alien win/loss ratio? Wouldn't ns2stats work for you?

I think the internal statistics are not released to prevent some of the rage that is already present on the forums (i.e. "aliens win too much etc. etc.").

It would be nice to have them though. Maybe they have their reasons...

Pretty much. People would go nuts with actual evidence to back their frustrations up and would not be very constructive. NS2 stats is the closest thing we have even though it is not fully accurate. I mean if a lot of people saw that one team was winning more than the other officially, it might be a turn off for new potential players.

And if they released performance information, people would have a field day with that as well.

Still I would like to see them. Maybe they just want privacy to do their own thing without the community breathing down their back.

In my opinion, the reason why it's not released is probably that it require some work to do so, and they have other stuff to do. Having access to the statistics would improve the discussion quality though.

so having a server is a requirement for map developers is it ? not to mention you would have to get people to play on your server in adequite numbers and frequency to get reliable information

i think the op has a point, uwe collect far more comprehensive statistics than ns2stats does. For instance a while ago they released map overview images that displayed where players deaths were occuring, you could clearly see all the combat hotspots and how alot of players were dieing next to powernodes. That would be pretty valuable information for a map developer.

They don't have the manpower to dedicate to displaying comprehensive statistics.

And you don't want to display statistics which aren't comprehensive for the following reason:
People who enjoy your game won't care about what the stats say, they don't really care at all.
People who dislike your game will bend ambiguous statistics to match whatever warped view they have.

I think that if UWE were to display statistics, then the data they choose should not be open to interpretation. It should be clear and obvious. Making patterns in vast amounts of data clear and obvious is an incredibly difficult task. One which UWE don't have the time for.

Having access to a sever of some sort is generally a requirement in order to be able to test maps, yes. It doesn't have to be your own server, but it does help if you can get someone to help you test it. How do you propose to test maps otherwise?

allow me to correct myself in order for you to put my previous post into my desired context

"so having your ownserver is a requirement for map developers is it ? "

    better now ?

The stats are just percentages and how many times things are used. From my knowledge they don't have heat maps set up like CS does for maps. The only thing you'll get is a W/Loss ratio for a map which isn't very helpful in determining what's wrong with it.

Well in that case the answer is a resounding no. There are many server operators and players who are more than happy to help you test and play new maps. Having a server to test on will of course remain a requirement to testing as it has since custom maps have been being built.

Outside of heat maps what stats were we hoping to get that would directly inform mappers how map design effects gameplay?

UWE collect a bunch of data from all servers, they dont even need to compile that data for us, they just need to dump it and the community can take care of the rest

heres an old heatmap that a community member generated based on some data, im not sure if it was ns2stats data or a data dump from uwe

lots of other games use heatmaps to help balance their maps, anyways heres the thread that proposed this idea

    http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index....howtopic=112307

You can do alot with the data than merely produce percentages. Say for instance that you could find out how much a hive took damage in a particular tech room over a series of games, you could see something like this ..... sub sector taking 10 million damage with 1000 hive deaths, then data core taking 20 million damage and 1500 hive deaths, you could then come to a conclusion that data core hive is too vulnerable etc. You could probably also produce a heatmap for ARC structure kills

Again ... im saying that if UWE dump the data then the community will start to do interesting things with it.

I'd like to see them too but they probably wouldn't do any good. People would interpret them to mean whatever they wanted them to mean personally. I think the highlights are known anyway

(Aliens win more than not, performance is subpar, etc)

They should follow this up by giving all UWE forum members access to their San Francisco development office.

It's time for the community to take the wheel UWE, what could possibly go wrong?

I think your response was rather over dramatic and illogical, the request is not an absurd one, I just don't think it'll ever happen, and it won't serve any purpose.
