game crashes entire computer

Natural selection two crashes randomly and forces me to hard restart my computer.
The game freezes for 1 or 2 seconds, and then the entire screen turns black. Ctrl+alt+delete or any other keyboard shortcut does nothing.

My computer is completely unresponsive. The only way I can get back to windows is via a hard restart.

I have found no pattern to the crashes. It can happen on the menu, loading screen, and randomly in game play.

I have tried reinstalling all my drivers, as well as the game itself to no avail.

I read that disabling catalyst AI would solve the problem, the only change was that when the crash occurred my fans begun spinning much faster.

have also tried putting cpu and gpu back to stock clocks, no help.

I have also changed the settings to every possible configuration, lowering the the resolution and settings makes it less likely to crash, but does not fix the problem.

i set up a second monitor and watched my thermals during game-play at max settings..... normal.

GPU usage about 70% @ 53 C
CPU usage 50% 40 C

if i reduce the resolution to 720p and have all the settings on the lowest, the game doesnt crash very often, but ths is very annoying.

I can play Crysis and Far Cry 3 just fine on max settings, and I have never observed this crash in any other application.

System:
CPU: AMD Phenom 2 @3.7gh
GPU: AMD Radeon 6850 @ 870Hz GPU clock, 1200 memory clock.
MOBO: Asus M4A88V-EVO/USB3
RAM: 8 GB

This is almost certainly a driver or hardware issue. Try underclocking and make sure you pass Memtest86+.

NS2 is heavier on the CPU than most games. Try also checking stability by running prime for about an hour for each test...

If it's not stable, get moar cooling or ease off on the overclocking. It might also be your power supply, but if other games run fine it might be unlikely.

My computer will also HARD freeze in NS2 on RARE occasions, my computer Is almost brand new ~5months old, and it will only hard freeze on NS2 it will never freeze otherwise in any game/program, 2 out of the 4 times it has is when I exited ns2, it went to desktop and froze where I hard to hard reset (numlock wouldn't even respond"
    system:
    3570k @3.8 (stock turbo)
    8gb dominator 1600
    gtx 680 TOP stock
    Maximus v formula
Drivers up to date, happened on newest driver release and previous

I don't complain much about it because it is very rare that it happens but I might as well post this to show that me or him are not the only ones

I do play at MAX settings vsync off, texture streaming off,

I have the same problem. :-(

    Since current build.

Intel i5 2500k, GeForce GTX 670 (newest driver)... etc.

Cant play anymore.. deleting cache helped once, but not twice.

If you could please post your log file so we can see if there is anything in it that may point us in the right direction. You can find your log file in: Users > [Username] > AppData > Roaming > Natural Selection 2 > log.txt . The AppData folder is hidden, so make sure you have it set to be able to see it.

Run dxdiag as well and post that here.

Another thing that could help is when the game freezes/crashes, run a dump file (.dmp), upload it and post it here.

Nobody likes an irrelevant bump, but this is related ;)

I too had this issue about 10 builds ago, but around build 240 or something this issue pretty much stopped happening. Unfortunately now with build 248 this has returned.

Same symptoms here though -- total freeze, frame still on display, and have to hard-reset. Very annoying as the Intel on-board RAID controller then wants to verify my RAID1... which takes hours.

    Desired information:
    • Memtest86+ passes
    • Computer not overheating -- I also use "maxfps 61" to clamp the frame rate (monitor is 60Hz, 61 FPS seems to counter tearing without having to use V-Sync)
    • Prime95 runs for a good 30 minutes without causing a freeze or blue screen
    • Other games don't cause this
    • Got Steam to validate files, no issues

    Computer:
    Display settings:
    • Resolution: 1600x1200 (native)
    • Display mode: Full-screen windowed
    • Vertical sync: Disabled
    • Texture quality: High
    • Particle quality: High
    • Decal lifetime: About a third
    • Infestation: Minimal
    • Anti-aliasing: Off
    • Bloom: On
    • Atmospherics: On
    • Anisotropic filtering: On
    • Ambient occlusion: Off
    • Reflections: On
    • Shadows: On
    • Texture streaming: Off
    • Multicore rendering: On

Not sure if related but on the first set of builds this happened on it was usually on ns2_veil, often around entering the Cargo hive from Y junction (happened to me 3 times there). In build 248 it was in the launch control tech point of ns2_descent.

Nothing special shows up in my NS2 log, other than a game ending without reason. Last few lines are:
    Zampuric killed Arkenspork with Rifle
Abuse will not be tolerated on RAW
    LaZeR killed Nakami with Bite
    TheIncredibleSkulk killed Nittai with Bite
    Pro9 killed Arkenspork with Pistol
    HeX killed Zampuric with Bite
    oN killed Egg with RifleButt
Chat Team 1 - Zampuric: gravity
    oN killed Egg with Rifle
    Nittai killed LaZeR with Rifle
Zinkey [RAW] killed Fleshmauler with Bite
    Nakami killed Pingu with Rifle
Chat All - Fleshmauler: cara :C
    Nittai killed Hydra with Pistol
    Nakami killed Hydra with Rifle
    oN killed Arkenspork with Rifle
Chat All - Zinkey [RAW]: 1 hp :D
    Adambean killed LaZeR with Rifle

Edit: According to this thread turning multicore rendering off could help me out. I will try this.
Edit 2: Just played 7 rounds across refinery, summit, and tram for nearly 3 hours. No total freeze up, looks like turning off multicore rendering could have helped.
