Video mem usage

I dont wan't to say anything negative about game nor engine. Let me start with my specs:
win7x64u
2500k proc at stock clock
1gb hd 5850 oc'ed 920gpu 1250mem clocks
xonar dg audio card
8gb ddr3 1600 cl9 ram
600gb raid 0 hdd setup
1080p resolution display
1gb video mem is pita sometimes (at certain games-apps) but I manage to run stuff flawlessly after some tweaking in options and this goes for every app-game. I can play stalker with complete mods for example, very good looking, photo realistic texturing etc without stuttering (if anyone knows what I'm talking about)..or farcry3 @ dx11 mode stuff turned to high-very high.
I usually monitor gpu mem usage with gpu-z and tweak settings to keep it at 800mb maximum so I can have smooth gameplay exp.
In NS2, when I see r_stats, In high texture setting it consumes approximately 1300-1500 mb of video mem for textures depending on map - gameplay. Now thats bummer for me cuz I only have 1gb video memory. Also r_stats says "virtual memory available" I assume its the same thing windows7 says in driver options "4090mb shared video mem".. when I use high textures, game crashes after alt+tab or crashes after having 2-3 online matches and this becouse I guess game uses shared system memory and needs to be flushed after some time, if not, it crashes.
In medium texture settings game barely uses 400-500mb of textures. after 2 hours of medium texture settings gameplay Gpu-z mem usage never went above than 500mb.
now, If I turn down all the stuff off and turn high textures, game still be using more than 1gb vid mem. If I crank up everything to max; same. I am forced to play game with medium textures for now to safely alt-tab the game and to not have crashes.
FPS is not the issue, its smooth as butter with everything cranked up - only problem is vid mem. am I forced to buy 2gb vid card to see game at high textures without crashes?
