Freeze Up/Crashing

I purchased NS2 recently during the Steam sale, and it was running beautifully for me up until two days ago. I have not changed a single thing on my computer since installing the game. Now it seems every time I play a match, I will eventually freeze up. The first time it happened I froze in the middle of a match but I could still hear audio of the game playing in the background. It eventually crashed to desktop and a message popped up about a fatal error and that I should send a report, which I did. Now trying to play again this evening, I froze up twice in the exact same way (maybe about halfway through a game). This time the screen just freezes, i can hear audio, and can even hit escape and can see my cursor but no menu options. Steam overlay also doesn't open. I left it like this for about a minute and didn't crash to desktop, although it may have had I left it longer. Only way out is to open task manager and close the program.

I ended up finding the log of the last game I crashed in and it kept saying this:

Error: Couldn't open file ''
Error: Couldn't open file ''
Error: IDirect3DVertexBuffer::Lock failed (Device lost)
Error: Couldn't open file ''

Can anyone make sense of this? And why is this suddenly happening now out of the blue. Appreciate any input. At this point I'm gonna reinstall and see what happens.

My specs:

Win 7x64
i5 3570k 3.4ghz
16GB Ram-1600
GTX 670 (310.70 drivers)
Installed to SSD

Sorry to bump this, but I'm hoping someone like a mod or dev could chime in here. Thanks.

    Welcome to the club:

Been happening on and off since late beta/early release, but it seems to be a little worse in 235.

Sometimes I can play for hours with no problems, sometimes the "device lost" crap happens. It's completely random, and seems to be especially bad around exos. Once exos appear in the game, I start walking around as if on glass, just waiting for it to crash.

The "solution" is to alt-tab out and in the game. If the game doesn't crash with "engine cannot recover" error in the alt-tabbing out/in, it will resume gameplay just fine.

Someone suggested to turn off texture streaming, but I'd pretty much rather risk the game crashing than have to wait 2-3 minutes on every map load.

I've been getting a similar thing to. I could play for hours without it or 30 mins into a game get it. It is somewhat worse on Windows 8 since it seems to lock the screen, preventing you accessing task manager, unless you change user, go back in and do it via keyboard, as clicking on it will bring NS2 to top. Only once I had success with Alt-Tabbing, every other time it was a full lock with sound.
