I play lerk a great deal and I use regen most of the time. Spores makes regen nearly unusable and it is is one of my greater frustrations.

Same goes for other DoT's. I realize peoples description of what defines "combat" at the moment (from them just looking at the game , yeah thanks for that). However, I think this is more of a programming shortcut (on deal any damage, initiate "combat") than intuitive, intended gameplay.

See what I mean? These things are not active combat, but indirect. Like a mine killing someone; the one who deployed/placed the thing isn't actually the one attacking...
