Seriously all gorges should be wearing Santa hats for the Christmas events.
Just imagine how cute they would look!

Somebody should make a santa hat gorge mod.

Before I explain my gameplay idea, I would like to state that I am assuming the NS2 community is largely against dumbing the game down. Dumbing the game down is not my intent behind the idea. Recently, I've been thinking about NS2s potential popularity and I feel that it has not reached its maximum potential.
My proposition is that a lot of noobs who are less skilled at games do not enjoy this type of game because playing NS2 is lot of WORK for them.
Natural Selection is one of the few legit games that requires REAL leadership. Leadership in NS2 is not like some blow horn in TF2 where people get their stats boosted with a radius. NS2 requires REAL leadership which requires effort and good character. Noobs have trouble playing games to begin with, so for having to perform real leadership on top of that can be a mouthful for them.
Leadership is a big part of the game.
When bad or new players don't listen to the marine commander its almost a guaranteed loss. Often these players appear to have downs and ignore what anyone says to them.
Bad or new commander that lead terribly almost always guarantees that you will lose.
So either bad marines or bad marine commander will jeopardize the game.
NS2 will often have a premature indicator of who will win.
Its a lot more devastating to have a bad marine commander than a bad alien commander.
Aliens can still win the game if they have a bad commander. The actions of the alien commander not as important and have less weight than the ones of a marine commander. This is why having a bad marine commander is almost always an indicator that marines will certainly lose.
Again, I hate suggesting something like this, but I think this could be an interesting idea for attracting more ( lesser skilled players ) and help them learn the game. We need a better stepping stone to indoctrinate noobs into NS veterans.
It game play mode would be called something like a “casual modeâ€
It would be a modified version of regular gameplay and I’m not thinking of the combat mode.
Basically, both marine and alien teams would have bots for commanders. Players would not be allowed to command in this mode, no matter what.
The gameplay would have to unfold predictably, the bot commanders have the same strategy repeating every game.
So for the designer it would a matter of figuring out a balanced ( scripted ) alien and marine strat for each map.
This would remove the tension and allow players to learn combat but ALSO the progression of the game.
How would this remove tension?
Players don't have to stress out over bad commanders.
Commanders don't have to stress out over bad players.
This mode might be good for newer players so they can build up their basic basic fundamentals of the game.
It's basically an alternative to the explore mode.
Casual mode would be for newer players that want to get into the combat and game play RIGHT AWAY but also want to learn how all the buildings work without being completely devastated and overwhelmed. ( I didn't have this problem but I am trying to think from a newbs perspective )
The bot commanders would have execute the strats at a slower pace than the average good human commander.
This is so that there would be extra resources to drop medkits and ammo.
Bot commander should have a method of dropping medkits near players at a fixed radius. This is to avoid instant heal aimbot from the bot commander dropping the medkits perfectly on top of marines every time.
Bots would need to be able to respond to radio commands reliably. For example, it would need to recognize that it needs to place an extraction when somebody uses the "need order" radio command near a resource node.
Just a thought though.
I understand to make this mode would require considerable amounts of work. If that work is worth it is highly debatable but discussion has never hurt anyone.
Other alternatives would include making the game F2P. ( which I am concerned about. )
I believe this would increase the number of players but also degrade the overall quality of the player base.
F2P games are appealing to younger people because younger people are more likely to play free games.
NS2 is one game where you can actually find mature people a lot more than in other games and changing the game to F2P would ruin this.
This is one of the few games where I thought to myself "wow these people actually have decency, and you can have normal conversations with them."
With F2P I would be hearing 14 year olds shouting "You're a ######" or "OMG, why did you cover me!? Stick together you dumb idiots! It's all your fault I died WAAAAAAH" etc
Just imagine how cute they would look!
