How about upgradable HUD?

Marine:
1) Marines start without a flashlight, but can have their awareness upgraded. First upgrade grant a flashlight, and the second one gives a laser sight over pistol and rifle, possibly the third one, places a tracker on to whatever You are shooting at, showing it on the map just as after a quick scan.
2) Make the map appear instead on the hud, make it appear before the character, on his wrist. Upgrade grants minimap always revealed on top left corner of the hud.
Aliens:
3) Aliens start without the special vision, upgrading it once grants the vision, another upgrade makes it possible to see through walls as long as there is creep in range.
