As i cannot play ns2 now, i can maybe assume how's optimization gone, but actually don't know how better it has become.
(Honestly, i found it really sorry when lots of players were keep complaining about even performance drop on several builds after 1.0)
But, i really hope it has become kinda better and if we won't see 5k cocurrent players(that means at least 10~15k i think) leaving cos of performance and some balance issues like november. Because NS2 won several titles/awards, and selling good through holiday sales, it should not get any of bad evaluations more.

Heh I wonder if it was like this when the game went public. In any case I lost it when I had to mute 4 people for mic spamming yelling and screaming on marines. I tend to go alien a lot these days since I know what to expect from new marine players. It will probably balance out over time. I do hope they stay because they will eventually catch on to the rules and more people to play with is always good.
Don't just wish them off. Having lots of players is great. The last thing we want is for the game to die like the first one because of lack of palyers. Pubs suck altogether, though, so go play pugs/gathers instead if you want better organized play.
There's a difference between organized play and flat out ground skulks running in straight lines holding Mouse 1 because they don't know any better.
