How to handle unjustified rants?
Now, with the daily deal, there's a huge influx of new visitors to the NS2 Steam Forums page. Alot of these visitors want to check out the mandatory "is it worth it?"-threads or to ask questions of specific concerns. Most are on the fence for buying this game.
Unfortunately, some ppl over there seem to have an axe to grind with UWE, posting one reply (by Cory i think) to an ignorant rude fella that was a little brusque (he just locked the thread). The post won't dissapear and alot of ppl buy into it and voice their intention not to buy because of that. I just can't bear to see such an awesome dev being rat######ed like this. I needed to do something about it...
I just want to give UWE a heads up, in case they aren't aware of the issue. So, if you're not all on a well deserved holiday in Hawaii or something, and you read this, you might want to show a little presence on the steam forums. It always hooks ppl to see the devs giving statements on such forums.

While I agree with you... There's a lot of different places people go to get the low down on a game, and the biggest one is usually google, which pretty much links first to youtube, and NS2 has a generally extremely positive showing on youtube.
Forums are important, sure, but much less so. Hugh does a great job hitting the major travel points, and there's only so much you can do on the forums before it begins to look more like censorship and less like constructive participation.
This is a real problem, but not a major problem.
Regardless, in most cases there's many voices for both sides on any given forum thread. You always get the counterargument, and the positive rational people tend to appear much more sane generally speaking, even if they aren't devs.
Still, I think the steam forums are pretty important when it comes to sales. They are alot more active than this forum atm and also, first thing I do when I think about getting a game is clicking the link to the Steam forums.

I agree it does warrant concern and I'd be watching the forum if I was a NS2 dev, but Swiftspear also has a good point most go the google route (that's what I did at least). First thing I saw was NS2HD and I was hooked.
Unfortunately, the unhappy people are more often a vocal minority, as opposed to the happy customers which are gleefully filling skulks with lead and chomping legs off marines.
So, if you want to help UWE to come across better on those forums, share your positive experiences with the game and why you do like it. As a rule of thumb, it's better to not respond to the negative topics, as the posters there will probably bury your optimism with pessimism.

I don't think most people go to the steam forums to decide if they're going to buy a game or not. Metacritic/reviews, probably. Google/youtube, ondoubtedly.
Steam forums can be really horrid. Not a place I wish to frequent often.
Truth.
The Steam Forums are a wretched hive of scum and villainy; and not in a good way!
