Background Box for objects - is there a way to remove them?

When you look at any structure as marine or alien there is a semi see through box that serves as a background to the text. Is there a way to remove this so only text appears? I play on 640x480 and I just figured out how to change the font sizes but that background still blocks the screen quite severely.
