Joining by group

Hello all,

I had a suggest about joining games by group of people.

With friends we are about 3-5 people to play together and had difficulties to join games in the same team or in a server with decent number of player without taking 20 min.

Soo, if developpers can make a little interface to join game with an algorithm like this :

Group :
- 2 to y people (via steam or in game).
- Define : Max player wanted on server
- server rookie or not
- server official or not
- Define ping max

Join (launch server research) :
- first server with y rooms allows (you can choose if you want same team or not, no problem with auto-balance)
- first server with ping with less than XX ping where xx is defined by user.

That's a begin, but definitively it will make us stay on your game or not, cant take 20 min to be in the same game with decent number of player.
Have fun to complete !

ps : sorry for my english.

    Hi there !

I'm actually a friend of Veskit, and yeah... when I want to play with friends already in game, there's ALWAYS a problem :
    - Either the server is full, and we decide to wait for people to leave (or should I say, for the round to end)
    - Or he/they disconnect, and we start searching for a server with enough free rooms for us. But even if we find one, we end up splitted between aliens and marines.

But I think the whole group system can be a pain to implement, and I'd rather have UW devs work on something more important, so i'm not so sure about that.
If I was to fix that, I would just allow player to join the team they want, but in case of unbalanced teams, server should ask players if they want to join the other team for balancing purpose. (I don't remember where I first saw this system, but I definitely think it's the best team balancing system ever :P)

Preventing players from joining a team ends up with people waiting in the waiting room for other people to leave/join the other team. And that fulls the servers...
I don't recall being on a server without at least 1 player in the waiting room.

So fixing this would deserve a huge +1. After all, it's a team game, so we HAVE TO be able to play together.

Cheers for the best 2012 multiplayer FPS ;)

    +1 on Nanane proposal.

Quick and simple to implement, he'll give a huge improvement for all players, and NS2 durability.

Additionally, when game ask to players from a team if they want to join the opposite team, it should be associated to a kind of reward.

E.G : 9 marines vs 5 aliens. When a marines dies, a pop-up ask him if he wants to change team.
If he agrees, he'll be rewarded with a +XX bonus ressources.

XX based on the difference between Marines and Aliens (9 - 5 = 4 * 10 ressources = +40 ressources for the switching player.
    The next one will only be rewarded by a : 8 - 6 = 2 * 10 ressources = +20 ressources .

    1. Increase motivation to players of a dominant team for switching team
    2. Help balancing teams
    3. Help to counter-balance a dominated team with resourceful players

    Hope it helps.

Continue to provide us good patches like the last one ! :)

While an idea like this is good in principle, it's very much a double-edged sword. In my experience this only works well if you can have group-join only work with other groups. However, we both know there likely aren't enough groups in NS to make that viable.

The problem with groups joining to play on pubs is that it almost invariably becomes a pub-stomp, and then when the server admin forces random teams to restore some semblance of balance and fair-play, the group leaves. Let's remember that while the OP may be just a casual player - as are his friends - there are plenty of competitive teams that would be happy to join as group to pub-stomp the afternoon away.

So while lack of 'join as group' may discourage some people from staying, having 'join as group' may encourage other people to leave when they are sick of getting rolled by organized teams jumping onto their server and kicking their asses.

The only way I could see this working would be if there was a limit of say 3 people to a group. That way the group shouldn't be too large as to totally influence the outcome of the game.
