What am I talking about?

You've clearly never seen a game where the Commander loses it:

I mean just look at that BS
People already spend a bunch of res to protect a node why not just let us upgrade it?

My thoughts are that you have an option for one of two upgrades and you can pick one of them

First one would be a straight up Electrify upgrade
People playing NS:1 know exactly what I'm talking about and this has been asked and suggested dozens of times already

Option 2 probably hasn't been
I'd be looking for a <a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xvuzr6_gorge-spit-richochet_videogames" target="_blank">shield that reflects projectiles</a>
Direct hits from bile bomb would bounce off and explode on the floor dealing slightly less damage, but would protect against spikes and spit

Once again my suggestion would be for a Marine Commander to be able to pick one and if they want the other then it's no refund when they switch the tech

Nanoshield isn't reliable enough as you may not have enough res to shield and beacon
Nanoshield also rarely gets used because a comm might not get notified quickly enough if objects are being attacked all over the map

    I only see one problem with that screenshot, it says the commander is Master Blaster.. They clearly should have ejected that fool.
    The fact he built robos in front of the armories like stairs is just mind boggling...

    So the options that are already in-game cost too much and aren't reliable enough, so you want to put in more options that will still cost res and be unreliable?

    Honestly, that looks like more of a wall off to prevent Onos from entering their base. Sure, the onos would likely attack the power node, but even if there was an upgrade I bet you would still see these kinds of walls (at what I'm assuming was) very late in the game.
