I just can't do it...
I'm good at twitch. I have good aim, but NOTHING dies.

granted, I can kill skulks with it usually, since they WANT to come in close, and they have very low HP. But fades....fades indeed. I've been at very reasonable to dangerously close range, put like 4 direct shotgun hits and like 3 half-hits in their **obscenity**, and they NEVER die. I've gotten behind fades and went to maybe 4 feet away and put freakin 3 shots directly into him, and he doesn't die. i"ve been in melee combat with fades as a HA w/ shotgun, and I can get off 5 shots, but he still lives, and with plenty of health. everyone says its a great gun, kills everything. I don't know. is there some trick I don't get?

edit: is it possible for my client to be bugged in a way that messes up the shotgun?

Maybe you're just unlucky or the Fades have level three Carapace already, which isn't uncommon, reducing 60% of your effective damage. However, there is a Shotgun thread running in this forum right below your post. It may (will) be more informative than myself.

Hmmm, well.. I've nailed about 5 Fades with a shotgun, I guess my secret is to get in as close as absolutely possible and run that sucker down.

As for skulks, I took down 15 yesterday without dying, ohh I love my shotty. It's a very useful weapon if wielded properly, just remember that the closer, the better.

3 Shotgun blasts at point-blank WILL kill any fade. The only explanation i can think of is they had healing support, or you missed.

Yup, and one thing I've always found that helps, aim a bit low, around their waist, most of your slugs will barrel right into their chest.

EDIT: I guess I was a bit unclear. The chest is the largest area, giving you a much better chance to hit it at mid-range. Heh, I didn't mean that the hitboxes took more damage in the chest.

A Jetpack Shotgun wielder is the absolute bane of the Fade. Sure its cheesey that you can flying back and forth dispensing well deserved justice, but if the aliens want to fly, they'll get a Lerk.

I like the Jetpack, HMG combo better, killed 2 fades with 1 clip today

is it just that these people playing as fades have incredibly **obscenity** aim and can't hit a moving target with the rocket, or do jetpacks actually have some use? personally I see a marine in a jetpack as an easy kill, since I have much better long-range accuracy in a fade, and I'll land a good hit every time he gets stuck on a beam or hes against the wall.

As a jetpacker, I don't zip about the ceilings, I zoom up to Fades, blast them and strafe away into the sky then repeat. Not only is this annoying, its effective. As with all maneuvers, this one doesn't always work. How's your Shotgun coming along, Chron?
  • ChronChron Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 6185Members
Well, I can never get any commanders to give me a shotgun, so I haven't been able to practice.
  • bitninebitnine Join Date: 2002-11-19 Member: 9283Members
Yeah, a lot of Fades when confronted with a jetpacking target will still attempt to aim for the target directly (bad idea) instead of aiming for nearby walls or ceilings in front of the marine (much better). If they're doing the latter, you're probably best in zooming up to them. Thankfully for marines, most fades aren't too keen to use blink in the middle of a combat, so a lot of Fades tend to backpedal when so confronted and then die as the shotty/HMG tears into them.

As long as the Fade doesn't have Scent of Fear (which I've noticed is still underused by them), waiting at a corner then pressing right into them with a shotty will take them apart real quick. That's why some Fades take Scent of Fear and fire at each corner when advancing on the marines. Even if you do get splashed a couple of times, it's probably a Fade without Scent of Fear, trying to goad any marine there into rushing down a long hallway.

There is, of course, an alternative option for facing a fade when you've got a shotgun. You can just leave. If there's some other nearby route to an alien-controlled area, just take that instead. As long as the fade doesn't see you leaving he'll probably waste bucketloads of time tiptoeing up the hallway, worried about being ambushed, while you can attack another site, or even come around the hallway from the back. Of course, I wouldn't recommend doing this in every situation, but it you are fairly certainly you can't get all the way up to him, dying probably won't help too much.

I know how that goes. Most commanders don't think of shotguns as a viable option, but when you've got a bunch of skulks, lerks and even fades running around causing havoc, there's nothing I'd rather have.

It deals with skulks very easily, since skulks don't really have any projectile attacks(parasite doesn't count), you can get up close and personal and pull the trigger.

Lerks aren't much trickier, close the gap and they're gone. And when they're darting around on the ceiling, time it just right and blow them outta the sky, it's not hard.

Fades are the tricky ones, but when coupled with a jetpack, you can fly right above them, plant a volley of slugs in their forehead and back off, repeat the process.

If there's an occupied Onos in the room, a shotgun blast in his **obscenity** will do a lot of good.

Just a few days ago, I killed 12 skulks and 2 fades without dying with my trusty shotgun, it's easily my favorite weapon. Of course, in CS, the shotgun is my favorite weapon(pump), in TFC, I always use the shotgun when I can and basically every other mod. I'm an up-close and personal kind of fighter. Just gotta find out what kind of marine you are, maybe you'll do better with the shotgun. If I'm ever in the command chair and somebody asks for one, I usually give it.

Yeah, it's annoying to have a commander that NEVER dropps shotguns. I generally ask for them in one particular case, and its a case where they would be immensely useful. It's before we have hmgs avaiable and when I find an ungarded resource node with some buildup there. I could take it all down with a shotgun along with any skulk that hops on by, but I've had more than once the comm refuse to drop a shotgun and had to try to tink it down with my lmg and curse the fact that I kept running out of ammo. Hell, I think sometimes it'd be easier to coax the selfsame commanders into building a siege turrets, despite the fact of the giant increase in resources spent.

Whenever I ask for a shotgun, most of the time I wind up with an HMG. It amazes some commanders that people can be good with other weapons.

    It happens to me too.

I had the misfortune of playing on a server with annoying soundclips binded to a certain phrase. Every time I asked the commander for a shotgun, he played the Hank Hill "Shut the Hell Up" soundclip and gave me an HMG. I was really getting **obscenity**, but whatever. Some people just think the shotgun is a waste of time and resources, but that's only because they can't use it properly.

be sure to make evasive maneuvers, no fade is going to let u get that close without going claws and ripping u apart, my jump is set as space bar, i usually shoot then hop left or right then run at them and shoot then hop back and right or something, just make sure that u get them stuck in between acid-rocket and claws, move back for claws, move up for acid rocket.
