Workshop Content Download Crashing Steam

I am having a pretty serious problem. Apparently, when Steam begins downloading some mods from the Workshop for NS2 it crashes. Took me a while to understand that this was the source of the problem. Since the download is happening automatically in Steam, I was basically unable to use the program again (which is lame, cause all my favorite games are there).
I managed to save Steam by quickly unsubscribing to all the mods before the update begins. I then proceeded to try and re-subscribe to the mods I had, and noticed that only some of them caused the crash - Combat and Gorge Race.
So I can't download these mods now. Anyone else having that problem ?
This could be the reason for the sudden drop in the player numbers as seen in - <a href="http://ns2stats.org/" target="_blank">http://ns2stats.org/</a>
This is probably a problem from Steam. It happened right after applying the last update (Big Picture feature and stuff). I am guessing that right now anything that is download from the NS2 workshop that is slightly larger that a few hundred Kilobytes makes Steam crash...
