Strange, when I was a kid we used the terms **obscenity**, and **obscenity**. Like "Your a freaking **obscenity** man" or "OMG your so **obscenity**" and never associated it with sexual preference or used it to slander. It was just a term and a mild one at that. Go figure.

Ops don't make their own rules. they can't do as they please they have to follow the channel rules just teh same as any other person. Personall the rules are just basic rules, things that should be obvious. What you don't like it that you can't swear at other people, talk about drugs or warez or post porn links? My My. the channel has some young visitors even people as young as 11, what if their mother comes in and sees what kind of things her son/daughter is talking about/looking at?

And as for the channel dieing? hardly, the channel has mode +D on, so you can only see the people that said something, the channel still has over 200 people in it during weekdays, when i'm on. considering the channel had 80 visitors with a maximum of 120 (on weekends) before the release, you can hardly say it is dieing.........
PS i hate netscape

If use of such terms in a derogatory manner wasn't a problem, the filter wouldn't be there.

I believe that it sucks and that it's **obscenity**, but the situation could have been avoided. Sad fact is, it HAD been a huge problem in the channel.

Polite enforcement by ops got nowhere. That leaves the harsh option.

Whilst i understand the reasoning behind banning the word "g-a-y", it appears little thought has gone into that decision. Banning that word is similar to banning "jew", ban the abusers of language not the words themselves.

No, the IRC channel is far from dead. The only reason regulars arent there much anymore isnt because of the "Evil Commie-Nazi Onos bot" its because most of the time, all you see is spam, cursing, general llamaness and idiotic remarks. Of course, every once in a while we get a nice conversation, but that a rare instance.

And BTW: Necro is right, the bot kicks you if you say it and gives you a reason, if you decide to keep on doing it its your own fault.

lol. 'ghey' is almost an adjective now for anything computer related and not-very-good. :-)

That's like the time I got into trouble referring to the smaller of the two x-box controllers as a 'jap controller' - it's not a racial epithet! it's just spelled the same!

Well said.

How about you just follow the rules that they want you to follow or not use the channel? Complaining 'ban the abuser not the word' makes no sense. They are banning people that use words they don't want on the IRC chan.

I agree that the IRC channel has its rules and that's perfectly fine with me. They can run it how ever they want. That said, are we not allowed to give our opinion on how we think it should be handled? I don't think rebo said that they should have to do that, but I think it's a damn good point.

look, the problem here aren't the rules, it's a bot that is too stupid to enforce them correctly. The rules exist to PROTECT homosexual people, so it's absurd that they aren't allowed to say "hey, i'm **obscenity** and proud of it!"

or that a jew can't say "hey, i'm a jew" without getting banned

just silly

human beings must watch over the rules, not this bot

IMHO it was easier without a swear filter on the Onos bot, because everything was at the discretion of the ops. Censorship really isn't the issue so much as trying to keep people from being rude and unpleasant, and also from using slurs like "g-a-y" which, believe it or not, actually offends every single **obscenity** person I know.

i agree completely, banning the g-a-y- word can actually offend more people, especially if it is their sexual preference, i am offended even though i am not g-a-y-, because it is not a swear word. I think its even banned on this forum!

ill try it out:

**obscenity**

**obscenity**

**obscenity**

EDIT: well ill be dammed...i was right.

Wow. When forums mark words such as "g-a-y" as an obscenity, that's progress...

I made up some random weird word in that channel and all of the sudden got kicked by Onos. (Racist/Sexist comments will not be tolerated here.
I realized the word had *that racist word for a chinese person that starts with a G*
I'll have to check my made up words more closeley next time

As rebo excellently pointed out, the word "Jew" is often used in an inappropriate manner. Does that mean it should be banned or marked as an obscenity? This is an overreaction that helps nothing.

Other words which are used in a derogatory manner and should be banned:

Lawyer
Polititian
Mormon
Catholic
Islamic
Christian
White
Black
Red
Man
Woman
American
Mexican
British
French
Short
Tall
Poor
Rich
Slow
Big
Small
Communist
Capitalist
Dog
Pig
Cow
Chicken
Snake
Dirt

I've heard every one of these used as the main (and sometimes the whole) part of an insult. Feel free to add your own. It's about time we stopped poeple from saying anything that might in some way be used to make someone feel bad.

My opinion of the IRC channel is that its their channel, they can do what they want with it. I'm not obligated to visit it so in my view if you wish to join someone else's channel you should follow their rules. However, this opens up a whole new can of worms involving communities and gatherings.

My two rupees.

Testament, your point has been taken, we're discussing it.
Also, Onos will most likely be pacified quite a bit in the near future.

Please note that this is the only 'Why did I get banned' thread we have allowed and will allow, and even it ends here.
If you've got such issues, PM the Op responsible.
