Choppy microphone; NS2-specific problem

I'm currently having trouble having my voice be transmitted and heard easily on NS2 servers. Listeners describe what they hear as "choppy," with marked variations in volume and occasionally cutting out entirely. (They also describe it as "quiet," but I don't have any evidence that's not just NS2's generally-too-quiet voicechat.)
I have a Logitech headset that I've been using for perhaps six months. It has two 3.5mm jacks, not USB. I've historically had no trouble with Ventrilo/Teamspeak/Mumble, and I recently recorded several hours' worth of voiceover for two guide videos in Audacity without a hitch. My recorded voice also sounds fine in Sound Recorder.
I've been trying to troubleshoot this myself, but between little discussion of microphone problems here and NS2's meager sound options, it's difficult. I've established that
1) the problem occurs across servers and for multiple independent listeners
2) the problem is not fixed by rebinding voicechat off of left-alt
3) the problem is not caused by me pressing other buttons while holding left-alt
Is this a known issue, and how can I troubleshoot this further?
