Good players please start streaming regularly

I really think there is a need for good players streaming more in ns2.

People like to watch people play video games. Right now the only on demand contant is mainly from a casting perspective, which is only one aspect of the ns2 game. I think there is demand (which right now is ripe for expanding) for more first person viewing of the game at a high level of play. Right now there are a few streamers but they don't really represent the best players in the game alot of the time.

By streaming you can improve peoples interest in the game. People come to follow you as a player, and your team, and this builds more interest in tournaments and specifically your tournaments. I think it definitely adds longevity for casuals to a scene.

So in conclusion, if your good, please stream

I usually try to stream when I command. Trust me, you don't wanna see me try to shoot. Here's a hint: it's bad. I've spent so much time in the hive/chair that my aiming skills are subpar for sure.

I also try to cast games when I hear about them, so please feel free to reach out if you want me to cast!

www.twitch.tv/CakesCasts has all my contact info there too for Steam for people who want their games casted.

edit: I should mention my cast is in 720p, but I might get the upgrade for XSplit and be able to cast 1080p for matches (it would drain too much to try to aim if I was playing)

I'm pretty sure everyone wants to stream, but NS2 is quite demanding of your CPU and barely anyone can run it, let alone stream it :D

    capture card I guess

Any bad decision, mistakes and deaths I blame on lag, obviously.

I'll work on setting something up. But if people are watching....I'll have to play better :X

Does anyone have any links for how to set up the whole streaming thing, or record your plays? I've never done it before. I'd like to avoid having to buy a program.

What's the easiest way to stream your own games? what programs do you need? Is there a tutorial? I'd really love to do it.

    free alternative to xsplit: ffsplit

How do you guys actually stream without tanking your fps?

I have an i7 2600k, OC'd to 4.5ghz, geforce 570, SSD, and plenty of ram. NS2 on lowest settings. I get 60-120 FPS in a typical pub. As soon as I start streaming (dxtory -> xsplit -> internet), I go down to 30-60 fps. This drop is caused when I enable xsplit. Dxtory doesn't seem to hurt my fps at all.

Are you guys using capture cards or a secondary laptop/computer which you send the feed to via an hdmi cable?

Is ffsplit any better for fps over xsplit?

A lot of people don't stream and play because they like being able to see what they're playing. My beast rig has run NS2 at 60FPS for a year, but even I can't FRAPS anything without the action turning into a slideshow.

The nature of streaming will slaughter your fps anyway. But also dxtory and xsplit will tend to limit your frames anyway when you're trying to stream. I think they regulate you down to whatever you're streaming at. My computer runs the game beautifully without streaming then I turn the stream on and it all goes to poop.

Dont even bother with Xsplit or FFsplit...
    http://obsproject.com/index

OBS is already way better, uses less resources and the new experimental game capture doesnt use the CPU for the capture process at all so all the CPU has to do is encode unlike dxtory/gamesource which are still using cpu alot. You should have a decent graphics card though or it will probably still drop a few fps.
Only downside at the moment is that you have to play in fullscreen or else it wont find NS2, dev is working on it.

Dont get me wrong the encoding process still demands alot of cpu power, but having the gpu do all the capturing is almost like having a capture card...

edit: for the game capture you need to browse the forums to get the most recent "unstable" build (which is still really stable lol)

not necessarily. I'm able to stream CoD, Crysis, pretty much any Source game with minimal issues on performance. I can't even run NS2 at a steady FPS.
I think a capture card is the only way to go for streaming NS2 unfortunately.

I switched to ffsplit after xplit was giving me a bunch of performance / sound issues, but thanks for this find Xeiz, I'll check it out.

There are constantly people streaming NS2 24/7, although it would be great to have some of the especially experienced/skilled players streaming more frequently.

You can see a upto date list of the livestreams on: http://ns2hub.com

I would stream all the time if I had the proper CPU and if I had the upload to do it properly.

Try FMLE (Flash Media Live Encoder). I find the picture to be not quite as good as XSplit, but the performance is better. You'll also need VAC (Virtual Audio Cable). If you need any help setting it up, PM me.

I would like to stream, but i cant:

After testing around, dxtory/fraps + obs/xsplit works good enough for casting, but actually playing with that gives you too low fps random mini freezes and stutter. ( 4.5ghz, ssd, gtx570...)
I cant enjoy the game with that performance while streaming(not even pub).

The only way seems to be a capture card, which i dont see me investing in anytime soon. (not that its too expensive, but dunno - i dont feel like i would be streaming that much to make it worth it)

I just upgraded my internet speed to 111 mbps down and 24 mbps up, so there is a good chance I'll start streaming in the near future. I also have a 4.5ghz OC'ed i7 and 2 gtx580's which I may be upgraded to either 2 680's or a single 690 in the near future.

I have a pretty nice rig, and was able to find the perfect settings for Lerk play ( http://www.twitch.tv/sabahell/b/341013058 ). So it's doable even though my fps is nearly halved.

It must be extremely demanding to stream and play this game at the same time, and playing good is going to be directly related to your framerate (if you're already good)

However I believe there's a few alternatives to streaming like a capture card... but if you don't have one I can't see anyone going out and buying one.. Most people stream to make money while playing their game etc, I'm not sure how large a following the players in this game would get.. who knows!

Usually whenever I play I stream.

My play is on and off, but I am getting there. I understand the game on a high level in terms of reading maps and strats.

Just gotta get my shooting more consistent.

I want to try obs. I think I am going to set it up tonight. Xsplit doesn't really kill my i7, but if I can get more frames I will try obs.

    Stream link in the sig.
