FPS Problems

<div class="IPBDescription">Can anyone help me run this game smoother?</div>Hey there,

I'm having loads of FPS problems with NS2 when I run other games rather perfectly. I currently get around 25 FPS with the current settings (and no other programs running) I have in my game (settings below) but I really would prefer if I got even more. Can anyone suggest a way to boost my FPS w/ settings or anything else?

Bring up r_stats in game and tell us what the "waiting for GPU" number is. If it's 0 or very near 0, you're CPU bound and there's little to nothing you can do right now except upgrade the CPU. If it's above 0 or significantly above 0, you're GPU bound and there's nothing you can do except upgrade the GPU.

Seeing as this is clearly a laptop, there's not much you can do at all.

Also, you can bring up a task manager and download something like MSI Afterburner and tell us or post screenshots with what the CPU/GPU usage is in-game/in the ready room etc... even though, with this config, I'd say unfortunately it's probably the weak CPU.

NS2 isn't very well multithreaded and eats a LOT of CPU clock time, so single-core performance at high clock speeds is actually probably better than quad-core at low clock speeds.

Man, that RAM is so overkill...12 gigs? Whew. I think it is your CPU. Mine is roughly the same speed (AMD Phenom Triple Core 64 bit ~ 2.1 GHZ) and I have 0 delay comin' from my GPU and I get hella bad framerate drops.

If you have any GPU control settings, change them to the lowerst.
I have a Radeon HD, and I use Catalyst for the drivers. In Catalyst there's a bunch of graphic settings and more.
After putting those to rock bottom, I got atleast 10-15 more fps in overall. So there's nothing left for me to do that to upgrade my rig
I get, 30-60 fps in overall. 10-30 in combat situations
    GPU: Radeon HD 5870
    CPU: Intel 2.66ghz quad
    RAM: 4gb 1333mhz
Everything is put on lowest in-game.

Lols I know I don't even have the minimum requirments for this game but the lowest my fps gets to is around 40 in infestation. Otherwise it sits around 55 fps and I don't even have my settings on low.

Even if you were in an empty server in 640x480, those numbers still sound suspect. What are your specs?

when has the minimum requirements ever been enough to run a game at more than a slideshow (assuming you want graphics that are less intrusive than fiberglass in your eyes)?

before, i had an untouched 3 year old pc:

    i5 750 @2.7ghz (stock heatsink + 3 years dust = 50C idle temp / 80C load temp)
    radeon hd4890
    4gb ddr3 ram 1300mhz

my framerate at 1920x1080 with graphics options turned off was 30-50 and any situation where fps was less than 40 was too stuttery to play effectively.

    today, i upgraded to:

overclocked i5 750 @3.3ghz (*new* aftermarket heatsink + cleaned dust from inside case = 19C idle temp / 40C load temp)
    *new* radeon hd7950
    (same ram)

new framerate at 1920x1080 with all graphics options turned to max (except AA off cos i hate the blurriness) is 60-100 and usually settles around 65-75 in heavy action.

    conclusion:

i replaced my 3 year old gpu for a modern generation gpu and so far have perfect performance on a modern generation game. what more can you expect?

I wasn't talking about how acceptable the min specs are. I was excited to hear what pc could be under the minimum required and still not go below 40fps...

I'm having major framerate problems today, too. Have a GeForce 560, Win 7 x64, 16 GB RAM.

Up through Tuesday I was playing at 2560x1440 60 FPS with settings reasonably high. Today I got the 229 build and Windows updated my Nvidia drivers to the latest 306.97 WHQL set. Now at my previous settings I get 7 FPS. Even if I turn all options to minimal and drop to 1280x720 I only get about 45 FPS.

r_stats shows that all the time is waiting on the GPU.

Not sure what happened here. I guess I'll try to see if I can change to a different set of GPU drivers. Are there known problems with 306.97 or build 229?

Update: Reverting to my previous 301.42 WHQL drivers fixed the problem. Odd.
