New build - freeze on menu

I noticed other people have similar issues, but not identical to mine so I made a new topic. I was surprised to see I was the only one with this particular problem as I'm usually not the only one.
I'm running windows 7 64-bit, INTEL Core i5-2550K @ 3.40 GHZ, 8GB RAM with a AMD Radeon 7900.
On startup the game loads fine, I get into the menu and everything. When clicking play the server list is empty. After clicking update it loads for a while then freezes. Note however that the screen does not turn black until I tab out and back in. The game at this point cannot be exited in the task manager. Whether by task or process and the computer requires a complete restart to function. If I enter the game and immediately exit, the window closes and the computer continues to function, however an NS2.exe task is still running and cannot be killed by the task manager.
Usually when network connection issues cause me grief, its my firewall/antivirus that doesn't want me to run a changed file. But I have ruled it out in this instance.
Anyway, thanks for a great game and heres hoping for a speedy resolution.

The issue is the game freezes:

The game freezes and does nothing. Then when I alt-tab to try and close the program (which isn't responding) the screen goes black and it will not allow me to close the program or terminate the process. Requires a full restart to fix. I have verified local game files, still have the problem.
Please fix your game, which I have paid for.
I run the game via steam.
I click Play.
There are no servers, and it says "updating" but finds none.
I click "Update".
The game freezes.
I wait, nothing happens.
I Ctrl+Alt+Delete and Natural Selection 2 is Not Responding, so I click End Task.
Nothing happens, NS2 still open but frozen/crashed, black screen with NS2 mouse finder.
I try End Process and End Process Tree, nothing happens.
I restart computer.
Repeat!
When you tab out, try
ping www.google.com -t
is it timing out?
Not only in server browser, also anywhere in the menu, after clicking it 2 times.

But in the meantime you could provide a log.txt, dxdiag, and even a video recording of the bug or a demo using the record command. (see stickied posts for details on the first two)
To record, be at the main menu and hit the console (~ key) and type "record anynamehere" and then reproduce the clicking bug.. You will find this demo in your %appdata%/natural selection 2/ folder .. please zip it up and link it here.
