How To Learn To Be A Commander?

Is there a good way like a tutorial, recorded demo, etc. on how to learn to be a commander? I don't want to join a game and be a newbie in learning to be a commander. Your best bet is to try a solo LAN game with bots. There are some bots you can download that are pinned in the General Discussion forum.

There are a ton of threads on this board that relate to build orders, when to attack, and a countless number of other things, so I suggest looking around in here for a while too.

Unfortunately, you're going to have to get some real experience under your belt, and unless you've been playing RTS games for a long time, you're going to embarass yourself once or twice. Don't worry about it if you get kicked out of the chair or people call you a n00b - most of them have never even attempted commanding.

A good strategy is to wait until the game is a "sure shot". Ie: marines have full upgrades and have secured 2 hives tightly. Then ask the commander if you can hop in the chair just for a couple minutes. I find that's a great time for familiarization.

But, as Flatline said, the only real way to become a great commander is to sit through some embarrassing moments (and angry teammates). Just warn them ahead of time that you're new to commanding, and usually they're pretty forgiving.

(Now, newb gorges on the other hand..........)

Hmm, on the servers I play on most people just start asking for an experienced comm right away lol

Haha, I was in a game about a week ago, and when I joined the server, some random guy was saying "OMFG IT'S FALTILEN! FORM THE FORUMS! OMG LTE HIM COMM YOU N00B!"

The guy wouldn't give up his chair, but we still ended up winning pretty soundly!

You can also go to a high-lag server and command it. Sure it won't REALLY be a gigantic test of your reflexes and pitched battles and whatnot, but it'll let you get the basics and shore up where to place what structures. It's what I did when I had no idea what the command interface looked like. Marines were even too busy complaining about lag to bother me.
