High Framerate Causes Lock-up

Been playing NS2 for a while now, and after all the many optimizations that have occurred, I finally find myself with extremely high framerates, the only problem is that when my FPS increases over about 90, I first start to notice black squares appearing all over my screen. Sometimes will game will hang for a bit and recover and I won't see said artifacts for a while, other times it will crash outright, and then I usually find myself on my desktop with a report that my graphics driver just recovered from an error.
Naturally I thought it might've been temperature related but after monitoring my card during gameplay it actually stays pretty cool (40-45 degrees). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, using older versions, and the newest beta version and all seem to have this problem. Enabling v-sync seems to fix this issue for now as it caps my framerate at 60, as well as running enough programs in the background to drop my framerate.
My specs are:
i5 3570k
670 GTX
12 GB RAM
I feel like a bit of a jerk complaining about this with all the problems others seem to be having about low framerates, but anyone know what would be causing this?
