I think it's just that newbies take the jobs that LOOK easy. In TF2, they all take engineer, even when it may be very, very difficult to play that particular map well as an engineer (especially 5th engineer). Contrariwise, Heavy is generally a great starter combat class because it's a bit of an equalizer with your immense power, even if you're not too used to it.
In NS2, they take the assault rifles and shotguns they're used to, whereas a relatively easy fit might be the Gorge, essentially just filling the medic role. Of course, Gorges alone won't win the game, which is an issue when most players are rookies right now.
I'm sorry this devolved into a silly underpowered/overpowered speculation thread... I didn't mean it to... was only looking for some tips with my personal issue of losing sight of marines very quickly :(
I've tried the suggestions here to angle up and increase my FoV and I think I'm doing a lot better now than I was before! :D I also took a look at that advanced video skulk tutorial video and started making more use of wall jumps and I've noticed that helps a LOT, but unfortunately it's pretty hard to do when you're actually fighting.
