Performance Issue In Servers Larger Than 18

I am running a
Intel Core I7 2630QM Quad Core
Nvidia GTX 570M 1.5GB
8GB Ram

I play in 1920x1080 and when I'm in a server 20 I can play with everything maxed even Ambient Occlusion. However when its 20-24 lag ? I'm not sure if you'd call it that. I have an 60-80 ping and I don't really have FPS drops I just randomly move back like 5 paces. Happens like once in 30-45 seconds. Its quite strange. Lowering my settings does nothing.

Sounds like the server is rubberbanding under the load of more than 20 players. If you are being teleported back that shouldn't be related to the client performance. Did you ask any others if they also felt that type of lag?

Type net_stats in console when it's happening. If it says the server tickrate is below 30 then it's lagging and you'll just need to try another server.

That sure sounds like low server tickrate. Servers that big shouldn't be run unless the server hardware is something heavily overclocked like i5 2500k @ 4,5ghz. Many of the more normal server hardware setups can only handle 18 or so.... We will probably get server performance increases later on though. Until then, check if the server is running ok with the "net_stats" command in console and stay away from lag fests where tick rate doesn't say close to 30 all the time.

Means the server is having trouble, not your computer. Type net_stats into console when you encounter that situation and look at the tickrate and choke lines. If tickrate is dropping below 30 or choke going over 0% a lot, you'll have the rubber banding effect. Only solution is to go to a different server.

Yeah I heard some other people talking about "Rubberbanding" and really didn't know what it meant. Thanks guys for the clarification. :D
