<div class="IPBDescription">ever..</div>Hey ;)

Please please do not release 'combat' as part of core like what happened with NS1 ;)

Leave it to mod devs so people have to go out of their way to play combat..

Thanks for reading :D

Kindest regards,

Bal

A combat mod already exists and since its going to be super easy to jump on servers running mods, it'll almost be like its official.

    Oh bugger

You're right.. modded servers will just ul whatever's needed to the clients..

So it'll be seemless to the players.. meh imho ns1 got an early death due to 'combat'

Fortunately, the server browser has filters. Also, I'm fairly confident that vanilla NS2 has enough to keep players busy for long enough, but we'll see what the future brings. If a mod improves the game (by making it more fun to play), I don't see anything wrong with that!

NS2 is already kinda a blend of classic and combat NS1. People who like shooting non stop can get enough from vanilla I think.

NS1 died because it was inaccessible in a time with heaps of other great FPS games to play of its type. It wasn't pub friendly or new player friendly. The community also was quite elitist and liked being small and difficult to join.

Compared to an accessible yet deep juggernaut like Counter-strike it is easy to see why it didn't enjoy greater popularity.

Combat actually was a genius move in light of the time NS1 was made in.

Having played at the time quite a lot... I cannot say I agree at all.
I appreciate your logic and the direction of your thought process, but it sounds like you weren't present for what really happened maybe?

The instant co_ was released, as far as I understand it and remember it quite vividly, the community started dying and thrashing about with less and less focus on the strategic RTS element. For a long time it became difficult to even find a server running ns_ maps, as everything was co_, and it was down to a dozen or less full servers at the advent of co_.

The community was mandated to transform by the introduction of co_ from the previously (mostly) mature audience of RTS/FPS loving people into a much more "Call of Duty"-conglomerate of combat players who didn't even know what an ns map was, or what structures did, and got frustrated/ragerecycled/didn't even play with an ounce of the spirit of the original game.

I whole heartedly understand where the original poster comes from in his comments... but I also think if people want to design it and play it, it shouldn't be restricted... It's just a shame that it's going to be a prevalent thing, in my opinion.

everyone switched to combat because combat was more fun and less stressful, and the skill ceiling was very high.

The irony of people complaining about the Combat game mode killing off Classic in a game called NATURAL SELECTION is probably only lost to the complainers.

NS Combat at its best is a world-class action game IMO, and purposely dismantling it or not pursuing it is a costly mistake. There is nothing wrong with being fun for lots of people.

I get the Irony .. but I see it more like a biological virus killing all it's hosts and dying because of it (hosts = classic, virus = combat :P )

Anyhow.. combat just made people impatient with the RTS/Strat part of the classic game.. so new players would just go straight to co_ and bypass ns_

    I'm probably in the minority

I don't think this was the case.. I think what you see as elitist and difficult to join .. was new players just going to co_ instead of dealing with the learning curve of ns_
