Black Screen when running NS2
Hi Guys,
i've installed Windows 8 on my computer and the first thing i had to try is to start NS2. :D
The game starts (loads a while now...) and screen is black. In Fullscreen and in Windowed Mode the same problem.
The interesting point is, that the game seems to run, if i move the mouse around, the navigation seems to exist behind the black screen.

The Builder crashes on launch.

My specs:
Windows 8 Pro
GeForce 480 GTX
Multi Monitor

(Sorry, please move to Technical Support) :)

Would be interesting to hear if they've tested it. I would expect so since they use C++ for the graphics engine, and MSDN seems to like to throw devs copies.

That said alot of devs are avoiding Windows 8, its a mess and I know my employer is.

Since it's a fresh install it sounds like you are missing some DirectX runtimes. Try running DXSETUP.exe in the /redist/DirectX folder located inside your Natural Selection 2 folder.

    \Steam\SteamApps\common\Natural Selection 2\redist\DirectX\DXSETUP.exe

    solved the problem.

There is another thread in Technical Problems

    Weekend is saved, yay! :)

Using Windows 8 here. Among the myriad of programs and games I have, only a previous version of Google Chrome gave me any problems whatsoever. It's quite a sturdy OS, design criticisms notwithstanding.

Yeah, loving it so far! First thing I tested was NS2 aswell haha! Also use a program called 'Start8' to get rid of metro if your that way inclined :)

Win8 has a lot of core improvements over Win7, including the ability to mount DVD images out of the box and better multi monitor support.
Dismissing it because it has a stupid, optional interface for casuals and tablets is ignorant and outright stupid bandwagon mentality.

Reminds me of the XP doomsayers in 2001, and that one ended up being one of the most robust and widely used OS after SP1.

Windows 8 has many architecture improvements over 7, but the lack of a proper start menu turns me off to it.

In terms of performance, in virtually everything (games included) tested, Windows 8 was on par with Windows 7 or faster. Aside from Metro, which is quick and easy to learn and even replace... Windows 8 is a solid OS.

    Bandwagon mentality is right. Sheesh.

It does in fact feel faster, which surprised me greatly since I expected some form of a performance hit. It's a slicker, more colorful, and intuitive Windows 7.

From the IT professional or programmer side it seems to be a piece of crap, it does boot pretty quickly though. As far as gaming, it is only slightly behind Windows 7 on most games. That's from benchmark information last month though so it may have changed a bit.
