This has probably been posted somewhere but I have not found it. I believe adding achievements through steam is the greatest thing you could add for this game.

It would extend the shelf life and time people play it because they will have incentives to reach achievements.

They could be like:

Pistoleer: kill 50, 100, 250, 500 etc aliens with your pistol. And for rewards you could give small bonuses, maybe 1% more dmg with pistol, extra bullets or clip, or a cool looking custom pistol if you dont want to add any physical advantage.

Basically like TF2.

I know balance is very important in this game so adding something small can throw off the whole thing, but if you don't go too overboard with it I think it will be a fun, great system to have in ns2 and get more players to play, and keep them playing longer.

Also, you could make a limit on how many achievemet bonuses you could use, which would add more dynamics to the game where one guy may want to use his shotgun awards, and another may want to use something that adds a small speed boost or something.

Please consider this I would love it to no end.

    this has been brought up several times before, and they also mentioned it in the DEV Q&A.

    as i understood it, UWE has no intentions of giving you any kind of game-advantage (like damage buff, even if it's small) no matter how long you play the game (-> same game rules for everyone). could be a mod though.
    they said that they might add achievements in order to encourage certain behaviour, accumulating kills is probably not on this list as it encourages spawnkilling etc.

    I'd also like some achievements, and i think there were already a lot of good suggestions in another thread. I hope UWE has planned for this during development.
    But i don't think the TF2 style of unlockables would work in NS2. Maybe some reskins or badges or something, but no new weapons... Was one of the most annoying things they put into Red Orchestra 2 imo.

    Cosmetic upgrades could be cool. Like a chain made of Skulk teeth hanging of the end of your LMG after killing X amount of Skulks, or a couple of Fade claws strapped to your back for killing X Fades.

    Not sure how you could apply the same to aliens though. Perhaps your skin could turn visibly more and more crimson the more marines you kill.

    A few days ago I posted something similar. I think achievements are a great feature. The benefit for the players should be only cosmetical though, not gameplay relevant.

    For example: They could implement a stats system like www.ns2stats.org to the game and give every player a profile page. As benefits for your achievements you could add stuff and trophys to your profile page.
    Also I think the idea of teeth on your weapon sounds awesome. Aliens could have some small skin changes like scars etc.

    But this is not a prior thing to handle. Some balance and performence changes really need to be done I guess. This whole achievement thing could be thinkable of in post release builds.

    Would be nice to see achievements (the type that doesn't give you any benefit ingame), though I guess there's probably way more important tasks at the moment :P

    Steam achievements are a good idea. But they'd have to be good and reasonable achievements. Not like "Kill 500 aliens with the pistol" but more like the "win a round with a new commander", or "Win a round when the opponent team has had all other tech-points on the map at once", "Win the round when all aliens(except the commander) are skulk/gorge/lerk/fade/onos i.e. full class-rush", "Never die once in a >10 minute game", "kill a marine and do not get seen", "use a phase gate to kill 3 aliens in 3 different locations on the map, within 20 seconds", "take ~200,000 damage as an onos and do not die".

    Of course all achievements are only achievable on populated servers with >8 people.

    If UWE decides to add achievements to NS2, they should announce it and ask the community to give suggestions in the forum.
