Hiding .htpasswd

So, this might be a very stupid question, but I would like to know if there is a way i can hide my .htpasswd file in my webdir.

I have attempted to use .htaccess, and the NS2 web serving software (whatever it may be) does not allow me to use that file. In general, any kind of Deny/redirect order would be nice. Having an exposed password file rubs me the wrong way, even if it is hashed.

First post, be nice if it is a stupid question :P

Hmm, querying the web server for .htpasswd returns the content?

I have code in there now to deny access to any file that starts with a period.
