Expected FPS Performance

dooneydooney Join Date: 2012-03-13 Member: 148697Members
Hey,

I'm thinking of buying the game but just wanted to know if I could expect the game to not drop under 60 fps (cbf playing if it does) - resolution at 1680 x 1050, dont really care if graphic settings are set to low as long as fps stays above 60.

My specs are:

Intel Core i5 3470
Asrock B75 Pro3-M
Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1600
VTX3D 3GB AMD Radeon HD7950

Thanks

This game doesn't scale with graphics (my GTX260 is quite enough). It is heavily bottlenecked by CPU and nothing else matters at the moment.

Oh right, is my CPU good enough to run the game at 60 fps?

Most people with 60 FPS have overclocked CPUs to 4 GHz+ or play small games where there's little to process.

I run an i7 2600k overclocked to 4,5ghz, 1920x1080. As far as I've been able to determine my FPS drops to 30-35 in the heaviest late game combat and no further, if server is performing properly and lag isn't an issue. Most of the time fps seems to be 60fps or more (so bottlenecked at my LCD panels 60 hz). This is very much playable, but certainly could be a lot better. One would expect a higher fps from a very high-end rig after all.

Devs are working full time on optimization. And your PC should run everything smootly by release.

    I run the game with a i5 2500K (no overclock) and a HD 5770
Resolution at 1280x720, almost everything on and high (only ambient oclusion off)

I run the game around 40~50 fps

Full game video that I made: (consider that i lost around 5 fps recording this video)

I don't see a 100% smooth NS2 until we put caps on certain units like drifters. The server/game isn't designed to handle the kind of spam that you an see out of drifters or other units/structures. On a balance and performance level, it's just not feasible imo to be able to make anyone's game handle that lag.

Well drifters and macs really just annihilate the server performance, moving 30+, let alone 50 to 100+ of them brings the rate to about 0.1 and choke to 100%, the FPS hit from seeing all those units idle in a room comparatively isnt that horrible.

Drifters and macs don't matter that much. Most of client CPU time goes into per-frame OnUpdate on 200-400 entities and GUIMinimap refresh.

nvidia geforce 9600m gs (http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-9600M-GS.9450.0.html here is more detailed info if needed)

and as you can understand this is a laptop.

can i get a smooth play? i'm not waiting great graphics , medium graphics with around 1024 or 1280 resolution is enough for me . with a fps enough to have fun from game and not to have a disadvantage

Graphics settings only affect the amount of VRAM used, and have no effect on FPS, as long as your GFX have enough VRAM. 1GB minimum.

The issue with gameplay in NS2 is only about CPU Ghz. Your CPU is going to struggle to run NS2. You probably won't get 60 constant FPS even at 1280, maybe at 1024, but again, that depends on the number of AI units in the game, as well as the number of player slots on the server. Gameplay should be smooth enough, as long as the server is running fine.

FPS is heavily effected by your CPU power and the Server's CPU power. Those are the 2 biggest factors in the game at the moment.

25$ bet says some punk forgot to disable an on-minimap-update trigger that's firing refresh 200-400 times a frame.

Thanks for answering , can this be optimized in the future ? As I said before I'm going to buy the game (with no demo to try it) and I won't be able to renew my laptop for a while. I don't want to waste my money :) Actually , can someone give me a link to download the uhm... pirate(?) verison of the game. I know I won't be able play online etc but at least I can test my computer using some cheat codes?

ps. I hope game developers won't get mad with this message , I have no bad intension :)

I've pretty much the same spec as you, and no .. we're both shagged :P
You can get pretty smooth gameplay at 640x480 alright .. but the font size is too big and nothing really scales well to that res (score screen, maps etc.) .. kinda understand why, I doubt anyone goes into this res who doesn't have to.. increasing res decreases FPS .. and this game is all about FPS + ping .. it's only when my screen is half filled with large fonts from chats/alerts and I have decent fps that I can actually bite anything or shoot anything and get a respectible 2-15 score compared to my normal 0-16

hmm actually, after some tweaking of my gfx settings (under windows)
and low settings ingame .. I'm getting pretty decent performance at 1280x720 .. 25/30fps which is pretty playable.. and seems to hold

I have no fps issues on my system (4x3,4GHz, 8gig ram,Gforce 660Ti, running ns2 from an ssd) but I have a problem with buildings appearing out of nowhere.
Today I stood in a base full of alien buildings and didn't see them until the commander ran a scan.
Is this a performance issues or can aliens hide buildings?

This is indeed a game feature. When aliens upgrade a Hive into Shade Hive, they can build Shade structures that make aliens (that do not move quickly or attack) invisible. They also have an access to Veil upgrade structure that can give Silence or Cloaking (which is invisibility effect for the single lifeform anywhere in the map when they stay put). You can detect cloaked alien presence by bumping into it, running on hidden infestation (you hear the infestation sound and see splatter, even though infestation itself is not visible) and by seeing the air around you shift a little, like above heated asphalt or something. Marine commander can scan areas with observatories to make cloaked units visible.

Mmm, actually I managed to improve FPS by disabling Ambient Occlusion. In some situations FPS drop up to 40- though, expecially in infested zones (I use the minimal infestation). In a case, while we were destroying an alien base with a lot of heavy weapons it dropped to 20fps, and I have a good PC. Great game anyway.

    i'm on a 3 year old PC and get 60 fps (1920x1080).

    i5 750 @2.67ghz & hd4890.

granted most effects off, but anisotropic on. it doesn't look as pretty for sure, but this game is really unplayable for me with less than 60 fps - it becomes far too difficult to aim.

for me, the optimization seems far better than witcher2, guildwars2 and maxpayne3 etc - but i guess they're playable with low fps. however, i'm thinking about getting a new pc for the sake of this game - just like i upgraded just for the sake of cod mw2 last time around. this game really deserves to be played at high quality, no matter the monetary cost.
