Gift key through steam not working?

I've searched this forum thoroughly and couldn't find the answer anywhere, so i decided to ask it around.

I have send my gift key of NA2 through the steam inventory to one of my steam friends. He claims that he has it in his games library, yet he can't install it. Is this a (temporary) bug? or is it because his will become available once its officially out on steam? Or can he get an activation code somewhere?

Its because the copy you gave him is for the game and not for beta :)

It's like if you were to pre-order it now you wouldn't be able to play it until release, same as the key you had received for free

NS2 gift keys appear automatically in your steam inventory, as long as you pre-ordered before NS2 was available on steam.

The gift is NS2 standard (sorry not deluxe), and does not have beta access. Your friend will have to wait a month.

Hugh posted only yesterday or the day before confirming the FREE copies to be gifted are only Standard Editions of the game, not Deluxe.
