disconnecting from server

Hi,
Me and my brother are having issues with being disconected from the server after a certain amount of time. It is worth mentioning we live at different addresses wtih different ISP's, different hardware, different steam accounts and unique copies of the game.
After 20 seconds my brother gets the red d/c icon and his game hangs. He does not lose his internet connection but just the connection to the server.
After around 5 minutes i get disconnected from the server, same circumstances as above.
We are both running AVG with it disabled.
I have been playing for around 2 years and have never had this problem before it has just started occuring very recently.
My brother has just started playing and is using my old computer.
We have rebooted cpu, router all that kind of thing and verified game cache as well.
Any help is appreicated,.
