Thoughts on welders?

I joined the beta a few months ago and it's been agonizingly difficult, but rewarding. Since I tend to be more of a distraction for skulks and easy prey for fades and lerks, I like the idea of specializing as a welder/support player. Do some NS vets here think it would be helpful? I've noticed that, if a team of two or three marines survives a skulk or two, I end up with low/zero armor and high health. The point is, I figure that having a guy who's there to keep the team from being weakened as they move into less charted territory would be helpful. The problem is, most people run back to the armory as I'm trying to weld them :P

A marine can't really specialise as a support, you're still required to do everything another marine would do. The closest you'll get is being the welder for a couple of Exos, and even then you're expected to outfit yourself with a JP+shotty (if possible) and bring the hurt while fixing up.

Just practice, practice and practice some more. You'll find your skill start to increase. :)

For sure keep taking a welder out on the field if you want to though, coupled with medpacks it enables your buddies to recover fully after a skirmish.

Welders are a effective combat weapon.

    They pwn skulks.

If you don't want to do much combat, you could try being a comm support role. All you'd have to do is go around the marine base/expansions and weld-up/build structures and powernodes.

Marines can support in a few ways.

    1. Spending your Pres on mines and using it to mine up key locations
    2. Hanging around the base more often to build / repair things
    3. As you suggested be a welder boy, especially with exo pushes it is crucial to have dedicated welders to keep marines alive
    4. Or you could just Comm, which is the ultimate support role.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Some helpful people on a server introduced me to crouching against skulks and so far my life expectancy has raised by around 30 seconds :P

This was my favorite thing to do in NS1. I've expanded my skillset by now, but most comms will appreciate having someone around to do the boring work and be the base monkey.

Being someone who comms a ton, having that one guy who will go build/weld/mine everywhere is a beautiful thing. It will also help to force you to learn how to 1v1 better, as most of your encounters will be solo.

Welding Marines need an highlight so they really can act their role out in combat.

As you said, welding buddies while they try to run away from you isn't so cool is it.

At least their needs some voice-com like "HOLD STILL IM TRYING TO WELD U BUDDY"

Now they removed having to have a welder to get a power grid back up I think that they need to stop armouries giving armour out tbh...

That would suck if you have a team that just don't cares about welding or are defending an area alone.
