Lifeform with ranged capabillities

Since they changed the spikes from a sniper to a shotgun pattern, the aliens has a lack in ranged capabillities. So maybe add a new abillity or introduce a new lifeform, something like the Hydras from Starcraft with their acid needle spit. Or every lifeform gets an advanced evolution for pres :-P but thats not possible before 1.0 :D every advanced lifeform should be able to do a previous abillity better as before. skulk got leap a advanced for can be a super fast and weak runner class with a bite wich does a little bit less damage as a skulk or xenocid is researched and the advanced form could be something like a baneling :-P, lerk got spikes, the advanced form could be the ranged unit that the alien side needed and so on. i think this could be funny so not everybody is saving pres for onos and other combinations are possible for aliens :-)

Cheers

Yeah, should just finally bring back ranged spores.

as announced by a tweet, the lerk will have spikes and sprores switched, so you will see the spikes much earlier in the game.

and don't forget the gorge! spit and bilebomb can be quite devastating... so are hydras if you use them early on.

why? that requires barely any skill compared to the current implementation.

i don't think the kharaa should get any more ranged attacks. some are needed in order to actually counter shotguns and flamers, but the main purpose of having two asymetrical sides is to actually have a different playstyle. right?

Requires less skill than the cropduster-mechanic? Permission to laugh.

    ...

Apparently flying into marines tapping space bar / holding control while waving my mouse around is a video game skill now.

    // edit
The primary ability of the lerk shouldn't have its survivability based around bad / low fps marines and jerky looking animations.

The thing with cropduster spores is that, either the lerk is a huge tank and thus can just fly around with no risk, or its going to be useless because it dies so fast. Spikes sure are ranged but they have the same problems because the lerk has to expose itself for the whole time it deals damage. Bite deals DoT, but the fact that you have to get to melee distance with it, makes it still too damn risky to use most of the time and it deals minimal damage. Spores dont deal damage to armor either anymore so they lost a lot of their effectiveness due to that also. We could also get rid of the vision blocking at the same time, as the lerk doesnt need additional ######mechanics to keep it alive anymore.

I think the lerk is pretty damn awesome the way it is. When you evolve to it right away you'll need speed an maneuvering to deal damage. Then when spikes are upgraded you can be sneakier and focus down structures/marines.

I went 20-1 with lerk once. It's definitely my favorite lifeform.

Then you come across a single marine with a shotgun (or even just lmg) who can aim decently. And you realise that you cant go close to marines at all anymore, at which point a skulk is more useful than the lerk.

Should change vortex into a rocket like projectlile that vortex's away some of the targets hp and armor.

What is the problem to which ranged attacks is the solution?

I agree with Laosh'Ra, there are already enough ranged attacks. Can't put a ranged attack on a skulk, lerk already has one, fade would be the only choice and in NS1 it was called Acid Rocket. Problem with AR was that it just helped create stalemates where fades wouldn't risk going in to the last marine base because they could stand off at range and to a tinnnny amount of structure damage. Thankfuly it looks like that won't be coming back.

Wow, surprised by this. I'd have thought ranged spores would be about as easy as gorge spit. At least crop dusting requires some energy management and has the risk of flying near marines. Sure, it's easy but in comparison?

Yeah, bit of rage there. I could write up why I think projectile spores are better, but everything I have to say has been said by Fana, Tweadle, Player in the past.

Performance, marine aim at higher levels, shotguns, chipping marines for medpack use, doing damage outside of an ambush, map knowledge, marine movement prediction, unpredictable flight animations are all factors.

I do not think that this will be an issue, since res is so much more abundant in ns2 especially in late game.
