Distress Beacon... The Misunderstood Function

<div class="IPBDescription">USE IT DARN IT</div> I wanted to shed some light on Distress Beacon (DB for short). (<b>Note:</b> Changed terminology to DB instead of DC, as DC is already Defense Chamber)

DB can and will turn the tide of a loosing battle. Let me first explain what it does. It will respawn <b><span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>ALL </span></b> Dead grunts back into the game almost immediatly. This will work even if you DON'T have Inf. Portals.

I had never used this until 2 days ago, as I forgot about it. I was going thru the manual and I set it in my mind that I would test it if things are going badly. Sure nuff, in a game where I was a grunt and things were going really bad. Grunts were dropping like flies. It was me, the com and 14 dead soldiers, so I started spamming "Distress Call" on the mic and in the text. Sure nuff, about 5 secs later all 15 grunts popped back in and about half were dropped fast. But this time I didn't have to spam it was the commanders time to spam the DB button. We did this like 10 times, luckily the aliens were confident and hadn't bothered to destroy our Rps on the map and we had a surplus. Doing this we finally killed all their Onos and fades and was able to put our base back together and start an offensive. About 1 hour later, we dicided to knife the last hive, to add to their humiliating defeat.

I would suggest putting the radar somewhere where it will be 1 of the last items to go e.g. near the CC or in another room. Most ppl don't understand what it does, so they don't use it. I've had ppl tell me its usless and they just goto the RR like the cowards they are. I always fight till the Onos put me out. I think this comes from my Evercrack days of not logging out when they tell u to. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

It's annoying if someone isn't dead, cause it'll beep for about 1 minute or so until someone dies <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Kind of cool, though. Sort of like an alarm.

Something else they forget about the Observatory is that I never see any Commander research Motion Tracking. I always have to tell them. It's almost like Aliens beginning with a Sensory Chamber ^-^

Yes I find the Distress beacon to be extremly useful. Usually if I have to use it it's all over anyways...I got in halfway through the game...the aliens were winning then and control all the map now and are banging down the door....but it is hilarious to see 10 marine pop up and unload into the onos and fades...scares em most of the time if nothing else.

It is useful, but be careful. It respawns all marines in the first marine spawn. If that's already gone and you're using DC at a secondary base, your marines will respawn right in the middle of (what's probably) an alien-controlled area that's nowhere near your CC.

I use it whenever there are 9 onos in the base and 9 dead marines and nothing but a commander pod (me) and a radar.

It's not very effective in that case, but it CERTAINLY is amusing.

Another note about the radar-thinggie (I can't remember the name at the moment):

Any aliens within the little green radius it projects will lose their ability to cloak as long as they stay in that radius. This ability alone can make the radar-thinggie the most important and yet underused structure the marines have. Combine that with motion-tracking and distress beacon, and you have a must buy building. Put them in captured areas just like any other usefull structure, and you will be a very, very happy little marine.

When I send an attack force out, I scanner sweep the area in front of them. I'll let them know if and where aliens are hiding at, because I can see them uncloaked, but if they're not moving, they won't show up on the motion tracking for the marines.

Cloaked Fades waiting to ambush really don't stand a change against 4 marines with shotties and HMGs. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

The only time I use DC is when we are losing and getting masscared at the main base. Ohterwise, I always try to get Motion trackers as soon as possible because they can really help the marines.

Like Flat mentioned, ALWAYS use a scanner sweep (or many) when attacking. It's dirt cheap, and hurts the ears of alien players using headphones if you drop it on top of them (I discovered this playing on Spider Gaming's LAN with kaosdrone. VERY evil little trick that can distract players a lot).
