999 ping in game

Unplayable lag
I was really looking forward to playing this but haven't been able to due to lag. When I join a game I am stuck on 999 ping whatever server I go on. My computer is in a DMZ on my network so I can confirm there is nothing whatsoever that could be blocking the connection. I play CSS and other source games online completely fine, just not this game.

Does anyone have any advice? I am on W7 64bit and my router is a Technicolor TG582n

How long do you wait, I for one have to wait about 20-30s for the 999 ping to go down, the game is still synching up during that time. The amount of time stuck in limbo (999ms ping) is similar to the amount of time you are on the black screen after loading the map.

Also to get a more accurate reading of your connection and the server tickrate you could use the following command in the console (~ key)

    net_stats

type it again to disable it once more

Well that is another issue entirely, if the other person on the network is completely saturating your connection then it could indeed be an issue. I guess you could use http://www.speedtest.net/ to test to see if you still have sufficient network bandwidth available whenever it happens

Make sure you're not on wireless, like I use often. I have latency problems with certain games like BF Bad Company 2 (was fine at first, now it happens for some reason), Natural Selection 2, ARMA II, and some others when on my wireless. My ping spikes 1000+ when in games. The game processes themselves have a really high latency when looking at them in Windows 7 performance monitor. Only happens when joining another server over the internet, of course.

I have to use a wired connection to my router to avoid the problem. I think it's something with my USB dongle and router that causes some kind of bottleneck or update problems. (Using a Belkin N wireless dongle and a Cisco-Linksys WRT54gl with DDWRT firmware). I've tried millions of things to get it to work well but to no avail. It's just certain games for some reason...on a 16mbit down and 5mbit up connection...can download and stream anything great.

Games like TF2, Counter-Strike, AvP, League of Legends, work great on my wireless with no issues.

Just a suggestion in case you are on wireless.

Someday I'll fix my problem, but it hasn't bothered me too much. I used to have crappy netgear and a different usb dongle awhile back and never had issues like this. So it could be a combination of the hardware I'm using.

I used the net_stats as instructed. The odd server I get lucky and can play on. On those servers my client rate is averaging around 30 - 45kb/s and the servers is around 30kb/s. It is 70% playable with a 3 second lag spike every 45 seconds or so. When I get those lag spikes my client rate drops down to about 9kb/s.

I don't really know how to interpret these results. Is it my connection that is being temporarily dropped for those brief moments?
