Some questions for a custom map
<div class="IPBDescription">need help</div>Hey im mapping again after a long time and i got much better (cleaner quicker and more gameplay focused)
and i ecountert several questions i could not find a good answer for:
1. How to make custom Textures?
2. How to make the "minimap" (when you press c) ?
3. How to make a custom Skybox?
4. How to make custom probs? And i dont mean how to medel them with maya max or so thats no problem! i mean how to import them which file format do they need to have that they are textured aswell. And how much polys are they allowed to have for good perfomance?
any answer is welcome even if its just shouting and links to some posts where this has been answered!

Go to "Create Entity"
Look for minimap_extent
Place it in your map and make it the size of the map(so your map, not the ready room btw, is in the minimap_extent, then look for what side of the cube is biggest, and make the other side as big as that one in the properties.
Thats basicly how it worked for me

1) ns2 textures are in .dds files. i own photoshop and downloaded a .dds converter so i can save my textures or edit some existing ones.
every texture has an text file. just copy such an existing text file and edit it so its fits to the texture location and name of your custom texture.
2) Mapping guidelines quotation
"<i><u>Generating Overviews / Minimaps</u>
Commander mode will be unusable until you generate an overview for
your map. Open a command prompt and navigate to your Natural
Selection 2 folder in Steam. Then type overview "<full path to your .level
file>" ns2\maps. For example, if you have Steam installed in program files
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\natural selection 2, open up
a command prompt, change to that directory and type:
Overview.exe "C:\Program
Files\Steam\steamapps\common\natural selection
2\ns2\maps\dev_test.level" ns2\maps
This looks at your minimap entity and commander_camera entities and
generates the top-down minimap, as well as the smoothed heightmap
which is used to set the current commander's height as he pans around.
After you do this, it will put these files (in this case, dev_test.tga,
dev_test.hmp and dev_test_hmp.tga) into the \ns2\maps\overviews
directory. You probably won't need to generate an overview with every
change you make, but will want to do it when you make bigger changes to
lighting or layout."</i>
3) Creating a skybox is rather easy. use the cinematic editor and search for the skybox function. you need your 6 sky textures in .dds as well
4) dont know :) would like to know that as well. and i dont have 3Dstudio max or something. are there other good programs for free?
greez Trainee
pretty odd ingame?
its said that you have to write "Overview.exe "C:\Program
Files\Steam\steamapps\common\natural selection
2\ns2\maps\dev_test.level" ns2\maps" but in order to have the minimap created at the right place you have to leave out that "maps" at the end.
correct insert cmd in ns2 folder => 'Overview.exe "C:\Program
Files\Steam\steamapps\common\natural selection
2\ns2\maps\dev_test.level" ns2'
i made a skymap but it seems to be a bit ugly i guess i need training at this ^^
