Unable to connect to any servers

I preordered Natural Selection 2 the other day, since I was a big fan of the original.
So I loaded it up and entered a game - this worked fine, though the loading time was pretty long. Once I was in the framerate was generally quite poor, though I fixed this by lowering all my settings (I can forgive the game of this because, after all, beta is beta.). Overall the game ran fine and I had a great time playing it. However, for the past few days when I've tried to load it up on the majority of servers I join I have to wait even longer on the loading screen only to be greeted by a message telling me I timed out. I have tried a lot of servers and the majority of them had the same problem, although a few I can join fine but after a few seconds the game freezes. I can still use the chat, but I can not see other messages or my own messages if I send any.
Any help would be appreciated, since I have way too much time on my hands right now and need something good to pass the time with :P
My specs are:
Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT
AMD Phenom II 3.0 GHZ
4 GB DDR3 RAM
