well i decided to look them in order (so i don't miss any) and i don't wanna post all of my personal impressions here. but i feel like giving a warning about Battle: Los Angeles
there are two movies you can easily mix up: (edit: i actually mixed them up. yay. should be correct now...) Battle of Los Angeles (which has only 2.1 out of 10 on imdb meaning it's an exceptionally bad movie) Battle: Los Angeles (has 5.8)
so go watch the second one, not the first. the movie itself was okay, although i have to mention that the atmosphere and style remind me more of transformers, battleship or independence day rather than alien: it's more about a full-scale war (with the focus on one squad), there are some tense moments every here and there though.
xtro2 definately fits the atmosphere. but i have to agree with sheena, it's not a high-quality movie. still probably worth a look though, if you are a fan of the genre.

Battle: Los Angeles - 5.8 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1217613/

You have them mixed around bud. Battle Of los Angeles was in the si-fi channle not long ago and it was terrible, even for a low buget b rated movie, I wouldnt reccomend it for anyone who lives on this earth.
Pitch Black is great, Claudia Black <3 You may have heard of The Chronicles of Rid###### and not realised it's actually a sequel to Pitch Black. Sadly, CoR is a different style of movie, with no critters nor horror themes. CoR is to Pitch Black what Wolverine is to X-men, they found the fans love the badass character so they made a movie around him. It's not as good as Pitch Black, but it's entirely deserving of the 6.5 IMDB gives it, with great support from Colm Feore and Judi Dench.
There was a third sequel, The Chronicles of Rid######: Dark Fury, which actually follows on from the events of Pitch Black. It's an animated movie and normally I wouldn't mind that, but I found that particular style of animation to be pretty off-putting. It got a better IMDB score than CoR and since it happens between the two movies you might want ot give it a watch.
I know those two movies are not exactly relevant to this thread but I thought I'd mention them becasue there's actually a new Rid###### movie in post production. This one's called TCoR: Dead Man Stalking and it sounds like it will have critters, at least for the first half.
I can't bring myself to watch any of the ones in sheena_yanai's list that are labeled cheesy or comedy. Also ruling out any set in 80s suburbia. Drives me crazy when movies like that are called sci-fi. I nearly exploded when I saw the sci-fi label on the movie Limitless. They call it a sci-fi because there's a plot device, a magic tablet, which can't be explained in modern medicine, but in every other way the movie is just a regular drama/thriller. Some sci-fi labels are a bit like the 'may contain traces of nuts' warnings on foodstuffs >_<
Since there are so few proper sci-fi movies, I’m going to stretch out on the horror genre side of things and suggest two of my favourite horror movies, The Mist & The Descent.
The Mist is a Stephen King movie, so prolly enough said. A bunch of random townsfolk bunker down in a supermarket after an unnaturally thick mist rolls into town harboring various critters. Importantly, the acting is really good and there are some confronting themes about human nature. Two of my friends were kinda shook up after watching this, so be warned. As an aside, a bunch of actors in this movie went on to do The Walking Dead.
The Descent is about 6 girls who go spelunking. They're basically exploring a cave system that's well beyond their capabilities and stuff gets out of hand. It has a lot of psychological tension, claustrophobia is one example. I'd urge you not to even look up anything else about this one, just trust me it's worth it. It scores 7.3 on IMDB and I'd say that's a bit underrated.
I'll also throw in an honorable mention for Dog Soldiers, written and directed by the same guy that did The Descent, Neil Marshall. A squad of UK soldiers are on a training exercise when they encounter werewolves. It's not a big budget movie but the budget doesn’t get in the way and it’s more than made up for by the acting, and the way the werewolves are portrayed is unique.
