It might not be the Combat Mod that it requires, as servers usually include some maps and other stuff as well. Combat Mod itself is relatively small compared to these! Can you check if there are any errors about downloading mods in the console?
sorry don't want to hijack your thread but i've tested on other mod's server and i can join fine but just combat servers don't work. here is my log
it says "Error: Error installing mod 'Combat Mode'" is there a place where i can go to directly download it!? because i don't see it under the combat workshop

i've subscribed/unsubscribed/subscribed all already, what i noticed is under MODS, the Combat mode doesn't download, it shows downloading 0% for a brief second and goes back to unavailable. what i'm curious is that why can i download this mod manually through workshop!? i don't see any file listing.
@NS-Soldier can I ask you to try something? Try renaming your Workshop folder to Workshop2 in c:\users\<you>\appdata\roaming\Natural Selection 2, and then running NS2 again. It will re-download all the mods you've subscribed to and create a new Workshop folder.
I wonder if it's a problem with permissions in the Workshop directory or something corrupt in there?
nope, deleted the appdata/NS2 folder as well problem still exist. i noticed under the MODS menu, the mod says unavailable and doesn't download

I find when something works for everyone else and all else has failed, verify your cache files in steam.
To do so:
Right click on Natural Selection 2 in the installed game list of steam.
Select Properties at the bottom
Click the tab at the top "Local Files"
Click button marked "Verifiy Integrity of Game Cache....
Should only take a couple of minutes depending on the speed of your PC.
and could fix your issue.
Worth checking it anyway.

A bunch of people are having this issue with combat mod specifically so not sure if it has something to do with the mod itself or an issue with the way NS2 / steamworks handles the mods.
I will try to keep the latest version hosted until this issue is fixed (can't make any guarantees on timeliness a link will be available after combat is updated but I will check on a daily basis).
Make sure to extract the folder to your %appdata%\Natural Selection 2\Workshop folder and restart steam.
I republished combat mode to the workshop yesterday. Hopefully this will fix any issues people are having with auto-downloading the mod. Also included is a fix by Puschen for the onos/exo timer.
Hi, I'm not aware if the creator is actively playing this mod but there's serious balance issues that's needs to be addressed to get rid of the absolutely ridiculous games, especially on faceoff where 3 gorges can block the entire marine team from advancing towards the hive and basically level up so slowly that aliens are garantueed a win.
Since hydras are essentially turrets there are good reasons why you can only place 1 turret battery in a powered room in classic gameplay.
Now the reason you don't see hydraspam happen a lot in classic is because the map layout is entirely different from combat maps (and since hydras cost). If one path is blocked by gorge with hydras, go the other way. No problem. Hydras are stupidly effective especially at range if several gorges team up, combined with the retarded spit, they can lock down pretty much an entire path towards the hive. Now while currently, people enjoy playing gorges as a assault class you should not forget that its main purpose is support (healing), which of course it is even better at for the team compared to marines (need one point spent for health and one for armor, and armor can't be repaired on yourself).
The last games I've played on KingKahuna, it's very common to see more than half of the alien team go gorge. Do they do it because it's fun? No they do it because it's retardedly easy to get kills without any skills at all, you barely have to expose yourself, a six year old could get as many kills without any problems since you only have to aim in a general direction and press M1.
Speaking of easy kills without requiring any kind of skill level will of course bring us to Xenocide which suffers from the same disease. My main problem with Xenocide is not that it's OP since it is in fact countered by welding and more armor. The problem is that it can be spammed (like literally, the only thing you do for an entire round is leap and xenocide, is that even fun?). IIRC NS1 had a good counter to this, deduction of points for kills with Xenocide. I'm can't entirely remember how it worked so if someone could fill that out, please do.
Having 6 fades on the alien team might also be considered a problem but it's a really touchy subject for some people so please try to discuss it
I guess that a group of gorges is only the natural counter to a group of rines camping in front of your hive and collecting easy kills. Combat is about who is feeding which team more points and going gorge is in many cases and on some certain maps the only way to keep the rine pack on distance with spit. Give the fade acid rockets and I bet gorges will change to fades. I see it as a necessary tactic and not as a pure choice to annoy rines. Oh, and xeno comes most likely after the unavoidable GL-spam. As long as GLs are in the game, xeno has a right to be used as well How would you stop 2-3 Exos cuddling with the rest of the team? Fly in as a lerk to spo..die?
And if you speak of easy kills without requiring any kind of skill...i would have thought you would start with the exo :P
In the end it is only a matter of tactic. You need only 3 points for a Gl, right? That should get rid of hydra farms and gorges...
Exos are no problem with the new timer system, gorges are a good enough counter. If they move in packs just get one fade with vortex, finish off one of them and then the other.
GL's is a counter for hydras in same cases, mainly when the hydras are placed in a spot where they can easily be GL'd. This does not apply to faceoff. You have a pack of (4*3)=12 hydras, that means that you'll barely get 4 nades in there (easily outhealed by two or more gorges) before you're really low on health because of the hydras. Combine it two more gorges spitting and you have a laughable round that no one wants to play. The thing is, YOU don't stop 2-3 exos cuddling with the rest of the team, you and your team does. Why would rines be the only that knows how to move in packs?
Thanks for the balance suggestions guys - I haven't been able to play Combat myself for quite a while because I live in the UK and have been suffering with internet that's literally worse than in Cambodia (having travelled a lot, I can actually say things like that without hyperbole!). I'm switching ISPs and upgrading to fibre-optic so hopefully I can play a game or two soon!
Generally Jibrail deals with decisions on the balance side of things. A couple of changes on your list I think are really good. Specifically hydras costing one refundable upgrade point, and removing the XP gain on healing anything except the hive. I can't really comment on the others because I've not seen how the current build plays. Regarding changing the gorge spit I'm wary of touching values like that, as we have tried to keep all the damage and health values identical to the vanilla NS2 for a reason (except increasing hive/cc health for obvious reasons).
I think we can make some of these changes in the next couple of weeks. They won't take too long to do and if they really improve the gameplay that's going to be good for everyone.
Also coming eventually is a build menu, which we're going to port over from our top-secret new project, but I can't give an ETA on that as it depends on how much time people have.
Haven't played much for a while, is it just me or do aliens feel a bit weak now?
Perhaps its improved hit detection or players have just gotten better but it feels like i die a lot faster as aliens, everyone gets jetpacks and fades quite quick as well, so there ends up being quite a lot, might be due to the onos/exo wait times?
Any chance that we'll see some new combat modes at some point, like mvm, instagib, dm, ctf etc?
I've added that bug to our project tracker - hopefully we'll get around to fixing it soon. I've also published a new version of Combat today, which brings the included extra entities mod up to date with Jim's latest efforts. It adds buttons, elevators and all kinds of new stuff for you to play with...

Either way, as a work around you can download the current version here: http://ns2servers.com/uploads/m5f35045_1359662647.rar

i found out that workshop stores 2 different versions of combat.
Recommend to remove and upload manually to your server
Going onos/exo in small game is super imbalanced and incredibly lame.

The gorge changes are desperately needed as it is completely broken at this point.
