A Zombie Survival RPG
Hey, independent gamers! A lot of you probably already know that in recent months Kickstarter has hosted a series of independent game projects, several of which have actually raised millions of dollars(!) in investment to fund the making of great games without traditional publishers. This is a really exciting trend in game development (and in the arts and creative projects generally), and hopefully we can all look forward to a lot more innovative projects being realized by following the independent funding trail that UWE helped to blaze with NS2.

Right now, there's another pretty interesting project underway that I want to share with the NS community: Dead State. This is a zombie survival RPG, in which the player tries to help a band of survivors to navigate a town ravaged by a zombie outbreak and establish a plan for survival. The great thing about this game is that, unlike most zombie games in recent years, the focus is on the humans, not the undead.

The thing is, no matter how well you mow down the shamblers with your automatic shotgun, that only really helps you to survive the next few minutes or hours; if you want to live for another few days or months, you're going to need things like food, shelter, medicine, and someone you can trust to keep watch while you sleep. That means that surviving the end of the world isn't so much about running and gunning as it is about building relationships, managing politics, and making hard decisions. If the antibiotics are running out, should we save them for the really important survivors? When two people in the group hate each other and absolutely refuse to work together, should one of them be kicked out into the cold so that the group can function? Of course, there will also be plenty of grid-based tactical RPG combat to go around-- although you may find yourself fighting other survivors over scarce resources as often as you hold off waves of the walking dead.

If this more cerebral and political take on the end of the world sounds appealing, then I encourage you to hop over to the project's kickstarter page and consider backing the project. While the funding campaign lasts, a full copy of the final game only sets you back fifteen dollars(!), and the more funding the project collects, the bigger and richer the game can become.

Hope this appeals to some of y'all as much as it does to me. Keep supporting indie games!
